Square Watermelons

I kid you not: all we need to do is apply selective breeding to obtain high-cellulose seaweed and get a huge feedstock of renewable ethanol fuel for transportation....

Farmers decorate square-shaped watermelons with ribbons before shipping them to an agricultural cooperative in Zentsuji, western Japan, on Monday June 17, 2002.

The watermelons, developed to save space in refrigerators, are priced at a whopping 10,000 yen (US$80) each. Some 450 to 500 watermelons will be sent to department stores and other places in Tokyo and Osaka - for display rather than eating.

Hmm...
I thought they were shaped into squares by putting them in square boxes during growth!
Are you sure they were developed as a variety?

LOL @ Success_Machine.

Yes, UltiTruth, the cube melons are not genetically altered or anything -- they're just normal watermelons whose growth was restrained with boxes. An expensive and pointless novelty.

Ok so they aren't GM fruit. I didn't know melons could be shaped like that. I should have guessed since bonzai trees are shaped the same way with wire wrapped around their branches.

LOL!!! Man, I want me a square watermelon for Christmas! :D And to think, how much room they would save, because you can stack them up now! Amazing! :)

   :mad:THE MAKERS OF BONSAI KITTENS ARE EVIL AND DISGUSTING!!! THEY SHOULD HAVE THEIR FLESH BURNED OFF WITH ACID, THEIR EYES RIPPED OUT BY KNIVES, THEIR TONGUES SHREDDED AND GOUGED, THEIR WORTHLESS BODIES FLAYED WHILE THEY'RE ALIVE, AND HAVE THEIR INTESTINES SPILT ON THE GROUND!!!!!

Christ, I hope that's a joke. From the best I can tell from the photos, it certainly is.

Holey crap...That site is wrong. I take back everything I said about it being funny...The poor kittens!!! That's disgusting, and inhumane, and evil. God, strike down the asshole who made Bonsai kittens!

bonsai kitten

dont trip, the whole purpose of the site was to offend people. if you looked through it enough i'm sure you would have found somewhere somthing to the effect of "none of this is real, we just did it to get a rise out of people"

concievably you could develop square chickens.

I remember that far-side cartoon- the one with stackable livestock.

Well, they already have bald GM chickens in Israel without feathers, apparently they are more suited for production in countries with hot climate....

A few steps furher would be to cut the legs and wings out of the genepool (that's considered useless calcium buildup and waste of energy / food that could be directed at creating a more meatier body)

As chickens heads are chopped off (only in some countries like france they eat the head, or make soup from it), why not create/select a race with short necks, wiothout eyes aers and no larynx.....

dosnt KFC already have some sort of geneticly altered chicken- somthing with 9 breasts or likewise. i never found out exectly what it was...... nor do I eat KFC
