The analysis of the filaments by Dr. Amaral showed that they resisted being placed between two glass slides as if "alive" and not wanting to be squashed. When under the microscope he said they looked web-like as if produced from an insect.

I even had the idea after watching a program about the symbiosis of leaf-cutter ants and a fungus which they harvest in order to break down the poisons within the leaves: The glittering lights which have been seen to descend from below bright UFOs to cover certain trees might be a host of firefly-like insects which are being harvested by a larger giant insectoid. The sweet tasting 'angel hair' might be secreted by the fireflies and used collectively as food by the host giant flying bug. There might even be a double symbiosis in effect whereby the fireflies are harvesting a fungus in order to produce the 'angel hair' as food for themselves as well.

Early birds wiped out giant flying insects

We have the first birds to thank for the fact that there are no longer any two-foot-long bugs buzzing about in the skies, say University of California, Santa Cruz scientists. In the oxygen-rich atmosphere that once prevailed, giant insects predominated - until the evolution of birds about 150 million years ago. From that point on, even though oxygen levels rose, insects got smaller.

Insects reached their biggest sizes about 300 million years ago during the late Carboniferous and early Permian periods. They included, for example, predatory griffinflies, giant dragonfly-like insects with wingspans of up to 28 inches.

It's believed that high oxygen concentrations in the atmosphere - over 30 percent, compared to 21 percent today - allowed them to get enough oxygen through the tiny breathing tubes that they use instead of lungs.

For their study, Matthew Clapham and Jered Karr compiled a huge dataset of wing lengths from published records of fossil insects, and then compared this with oxygen levels over hundreds of millions of years of insect evolution.

"Maximum insect size does track oxygen surprisingly well as it goes up and down for about 200 million years," says Clapham.

"Then right around the end of the Jurassic and beginning of the Cretaceous period, about 150 million years ago, all of a sudden oxygen goes up but insect size goes down. And this coincides really strikingly with the evolution of birds."

With predatory birds about, they suggest, maneuverability became vital, favoring a smaller body size.

Another transition in insect size occurred at the end of the Cretaceous period, between 90 and 65 million years ago. A shortage of fossils makes it hard to be certain, but the researchers reckon this could be down to the continued specialization of birds, the evolution of bats and a mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous.

"I suspect it's from the continuing specialization of birds," says Clapham. "The early birds were not very good at flying. But by the end of the Cretaceous, birds did look quite a lot like modern birds."

If a species of giant flying insect had a unique defense against the early birds, then they could easily have survived.

Edit(!) Also a species that only flew during the dark would be free from the attack of birds in the air. Their eggs and nymphs would be the most vulnerable part of the life cycle. If they could evolve a strategy that eliminated this predation from birds and mammals etc, then they could easily have survived. If they laid their eggs underwater then this would solve this problem. If they laid them deep in the silty bottoms of river outlets and lakes, then they would be free from predation. If the larvae were large, then they would become the predators within the murky waters.

Denver UFOs Likely Insects, Says Cinematographer

Depending on whom you ask, there's either an unidentified flying object that makes regular trips over downtown Denver in the middle of the day, or, a local news crew broadcast a five-minute segment that showcases insects' ability to fly in front of cameras.

Both camps have been vocal on Internet comment threads in the days since local Fox affiliate KDVR first reported the "mile-high mystery in the skies over Denver," but no one's cinched the issue.

The reason Denver's supposed serial UFO has earned widespread media attention seems to be because, in a rare twist, KDVR's attempt to verify a viewer-reported UFO sighting actually resulted in the station's own photojournalist filming a UFO. The story began when a Denver man who asked not to be identified shared video footage with KDVR of flying objects he said he'd been filming on a near-daily basis with his digital camera, usually between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. local time and always from a vantage about 10 miles north of the city center. The objects manifest on his recordings as erratically moving dark blotches, sometimes flitting around at odd angles, and sometimes seeming to tumble end-over-end through the sky

I woke up with the idea that the Portugal Evora incident of 1959 in the OP is the ending of a giant bug life cycle. The slow moving UFO is so aged that another one has come in to claim it's swarm of attendant small insects and will consume the larger one in a final act. This is the reason that no fossils or corpses of giant flying insects have been found. The angel hair is an over-reaction of the aged UFO in trying to survive, producing too much food in an effort for survival.
