I actually like this one, I think it would appeal to the mainly teenage population here, although it could be construed as being sexist, so you may have to add a ribbon in the nerds hair.

I see some cool suggestions here, but also a lot of crap :) Anyway, I respect your thoughts, so I've collected some of your ideas and created a few more samples. Let me know what you think ...

I suggest we wait till the end of the next week for a new logo (for those of us working, making logos during the worktime is not always possible),
then, taking in mind the responses to the logos submitted, the best looking ones are voted on (a seperate pool thread).

Till that time I suggest the alien one is taken off and maybe temporaly replaced just with the SF letters in that razory circle.

I agree with Avatar that we should wait till say next Wednesday for the others to catch up, but so far I do like this effort, the logo is obscure enough (for me anyway) to not be obvious but is still interesting.

The razory one with SF beats the razory thing with alien head, for sure. I can live with razory-SF thingy. But keep working on it, artists out there!

I don't know if this is copyrighted or not. It's a pretty common illusion, so I kinda doubt it.
There are other, similar, illusions that might be usable too.
Hey I like the idea of the triangle 'being there' but not really being there. I tried something along those lines with an "S" and an "f" but I'm not sure how easily its' spotted. It may be too subtle:

I prefer the white-on-dark theme on the existing logo, its much simpler and stylish rather than having loads of colours. But I think the backround image needs to be a little darker to 'bring out' the white shapes, lines and letters of a minimalist look:

I must admit, while recognising how immediately inappropriate it was, it did bring a smile to my face, thinking of the potential for free abstract thinking. never mind back in our boxes we go.

Hey. Getting some nice ones now.

These are the three I like best:

This is my favorite (of course) but I would suggest trying to make the circles a bit smaller? It would make the illusion more... startling. But, it looks nice.

I also like this one. I had similar thoughts at first when trying to think of something. The 3d aspect of it is nice. But, it does suggest a bent towards chemistry.

Oh. And it's missing an atom. Should be three atoms in back. One in front.

The other one with the green is cool... but I don't think the green is a good idea.

This one is kinda dorky, I know. But it has some appeal. It reminds me of headnoise. Something which the great ones always suffer from.

Oh.
And I like the idea with the S and F as back and fore ground. But, I don't like the block lettering. Perhaps something else could be worked out in that regard.

It reminds me of some of the notions in Hostadter's GEB.

This one is the best so far.

The temporary sf is a good idea, but the s is too large.
Didn't they used to both be lowercase such as depicted on my 3d version on the first page of this thread?

What's the whole point of the earth picture, and the spaceship coming towards it?
It used to be just a simple logo.

The thinker is too cliche.
And too pompous, as well.

We need something more abstract.
Like my first two picks.

Or something that pokes holes in the whole 'intellectual elitism' thing that some people have.
Like Spurious' example.

There is something to be said for making the 'sf' lowercase.
