SETI: Run by charlatans or fools?

Because the SETI folk themselves don't believe there will be a null result. They've said as much themselves, and the post by Pete contradicts their position.

That wasn't the actual gist of Pete's post, and is neither here nor there.
SETI is justified under any result, for the many reasons already stated.
If SETI believes they will discover something, great.....I'm undecided but certainly hope its true.

The rest of your pedant, errors, and omissions are disregarded and disregarded as they should be..

SETI is equivalent to snooping on aliens that might be using RF telecommunications. Either they don't exist or they don't use telecommunications (according to SETI). We have not asked the question: would aliens land if we invited them. We, as a species, have not asked them question. We have not invited them to land. We would have to give them assurances that our governments are not going to scramble fighter planes and shoot at them. For that, we need promises from governments around the world. SETI is privately funded, so nobody can take away it's funding. But I would support an effort to answer the question: will aliens land if we invite them.

Of course it was. Again, I have to wonder whether this is a language barrier issue, or if you simply lack basic integrity.

That's not even close to being decided. And the "many reasons" you've stated have been vague. You say things like "GREATEST REVELATION IN HUMAN HISTORY" and the like, without actually enumerating what benefits will come from such a discovery. I even asked you directly what those benefits would be, and don't think your evasion has gone unnoticed.

I don't think you're capable of understanding the benefits of knowing that we're not alone. It involves feelings such as "peace of mind" and "hope". Do you know what those are? Have you ever experienced those things?

What are those big returns, exactly? And are they worth the billions required to gain them?

Certainly, no question about it.

Not just haven't a clue what it says, but can't actually determine if it's intelligent in nature. Remember the WOW signal? There have been a few more recently where they best they can say is "maybe."

No, you need English lessons. Check what you did say. You inferred that it was determined as intelligent.
and that was....
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
Though, now that you mention it, betting on SETI is pretty dumb, because it's highly unlikely they'd know what to make of a signal even if they could determine it was the result of alien intelligence.

That's the second time you have shown some misunderstanding in what you have posted.

Except we pretty much already accept that there are intelligent alien species out there, so this would confirmation, not revelation. I mean, if it happens, great. But I don't have high hopes that SETI will be what does the trick. And I sure don't like the fuzzy maths they use to make their silly "predictions."

The mainstream scientific view is "WE DO NOT KNOW"
Individuals though are of the opinion that ETL certainly does exist for the reasons I have stated.
Can I be of any more help???

Certainly, no question about it.

I asked you what those benefits were. Answer the question.

Do you really think you're disagreeing with me?

...wow.

The mainstream scientific view is "there must be." I can't imagine you being able to find a scientist who would look you in the eye and say aliens don't exist.

And yes, you could be of more help by answering the question you keep avoiding. Or, at least say you don't know the answer to it. It would destroy your argument, but at least it would be honest.

Casting aspersions instead of making an actual argument doesn't do anything to advance the discussion.

And how high-strung are you that one question mark isn't enough? Take a pill, homie.

To quote your own reply in post 71..."
You call that nasty? You must be very thin-skinned.

Which then calls into discussion your hypocrisy.

.

No, the mainstream scientific view is "WE DO NOT KNOW" OR "we have no evidence to suggest ETL exists"
I would try and get familiar with science if I was you.

The rest of your diatribe is in cesspool.

So you can't answer the question, then?

As usual when speaking of the advantages of SETI, those two horrid variables of economics and politics are innevitably raised by the cynics, just as they are raised in other scientific endeavours that seeks to advance our knowledge and thinking.
Who knows, and in the face of what great knowledge and revelations that may possibly be discovered, who the hell cares in the long run.

I'll take that as a no.

Moving on.

Moving on.

It would be nice for you to move along, as you don't even appear to have a grasp of basic mainstream science...Or do you now agree that the correct mainstream answer is "WE DO NOT KNOW" and/or "WE HAVE NO DIRECT EVIDENCE"
If you can accept that you have learnt something.

Whatever you take as a no, I would suggest you read the links I have given, and stop acting trollish.
If you disagree, then that's your perogative.

I'll reiterate anyway......The obvious advantages of SETI, will always be confronted by those two variables of economics and politics, just as happens in other arenas of science, and are pushed in the main, by individuals that are unimaginative and short-sighted.

In other words, you can't actually enumerate the advantages of SETI, and will instead insult anyone who disagrees with you like the lackwit troll you are.

;)

I'll leave the posts and those that read them to decide.
OK??????

ps: word of advice...Have a disprin and a good lie down...You may have a coronary if you are not careful.

My vote is for you occupying the 'lackwit troll' slot in this thread.

Hard to Imagine what drives some SETI critics. It's costing them nothing...No one will make any monetary gain from its operation, so what's the beef??? Some rather thoughtful, Imaginative knowledge seeking individuals, doing what man has done since he climbed down out of the trees.
The same anti SETI brigade, were they screaming/whinging about the costs etc of the "useless"endeavours of putting man on the Moon??The Space Shuttle???, The ISS???, the HST??? the Mars probes?? Voyager?, Pioneer?? etc etc etc.
Were they crying re how much bang for their buck??

SETI is an Innovative project to extend our understanding of the Universe and our place within it.
The "more bang for your buck" is never the prime reason for science. That reason is furthering our knowledge and place within this Universe. This cannot be measured directly by invoking the " bag for your buck" concept.

The future will see an eventual return to the Moon, probably manned Asteroid exploration, and of course manned Mars missions.
I hope that the same screams when these futuristic projects finally take off, are well and truly stifled underfoot.
Space exploration and research is our destiny, it is the final frontier [as corny as that may sound] and man will continue to probe, explore and learn from this new environment.
SETI is part and parcel of this effort.

We search the stars for life, and for the same reasons we climbed Mnt Everest, explored Antarctica, because they are there, and because its our very nature to explore, risk life maybe, gain knowledge most certainly, and of course the adrenalin rush and the glory.

So to our science spoilers out there...Let it go, it's costing you nothing, and even though the longest of long shots, the return will be breath-takingly humanity changing, and for the better I might add.

And of course any positive results would hasten efforts to discover the most efficient path to the stars.
Orginisations such as Tau Zero, and 100 Year Star Ship Co, will have a head start.
*end of rant*

Oh, on the contrary! We've all been explaining to you why SETI exists and what the benefits of it are. Therein lie its advantages. Let me remind you of what the term advantage means
Advantage - something (such as a good position or condition) that helps to make someone or something better or more likely to succeed than others

Since the beginning of his existence, man has been exploring the world around him and we'll keep doing that forever it seems. At least I hope it does. When we learn more about our place in the universe it helps us. It makes us better than we were before. We search and we search and we search about who we are and our place in the universe. To do this it’s necessary to seek out life in the universe. That you can’t see that won’t change by asking anybody about it. You have to have known that to begin with otherwise you don’t have an adventurous heart or a scientific mind.
