RAM: how much?

Looks like my next presentation has to be a short documentary film or something, probably with scifi and special [sound] effects. Wonder how to work the data into that scenario. Plus I'm probably working under a Japanese woman, so I'll really have to stretch my skills. :roflmao:

Thanks I'll aim for the 1x2 GB for now and upgrade as I need it. This is so exciting, I love new toys.
 
Me too. I actually just sold off my desktop and got a laptop around 3 weeks ago, it's pretty liberating. And oh so pretty.

I use Skype with a digital camera to keep up with my folks. my computer is 2-3 years old, cheap one and the RAM is upgraded to 1 G and handles the task just fine. It is more of the Operating system that will use up too much memory, so if you can have XP or whatever the Max uses, you can save RAM on that...

So with 2 G you should be plenty fine... Unless you want high def pron webcams, then go with high end 4 G....

About laptop survival time: Our laptop is 1.5 years old and showing signs of dying already, so I wouldn't plan more than 2-3 years. It is very easy to drop it or spill something over it.
 
I'd think that a 2 GIG would be fine with a duel core but see if you can be able to upgrade the RAM to 4 GIGs in the future with whatever laptop you decide on. A good graphics or video card would alkso be wise to get as well. Duel core processors are very good now and if you get one with at least 3.0 MEGs then you will be fine. Photoshop is a good quality graphics program but there are others out there as good and cheaper.

I have a digital camera, but I plan to get an inbuilt webcam in my laptop, so I need to carry only one thing. :p

My current laptop is 3 years old and still in good working order. So I'm hoping this will continue. My stuff usually lasts forever, even though I use it roughly, I have good karma with machines. :p

Er, think you mean gigahertz. I don't think they make sub 1GHz processors anymore. :p

And currently I don't think any 3.0GHz mobile processors exist, although they will be coming out later this year. The highest is a 2.5 or 6.

Ah yes, I was desktop-y for a decade, when an upgrade meant calling up my neighbor and dismantling the computer he furbished for us. :p

I've been using a Mac for 3 years now, with pretty sophisticated software and it hasn't crashed once. Even the programs that hang up are MS Office or related. Thats good enough for me to swear off PCs forever. :cool:

I have a 2.5 GHz, you don't really need more unless you are a games freak.

Meh, different strokes for different folks. The price premium and hardware lockdown of Macs is very unappealing to me, and Windows is familiar and easy to use so I'm a PC guy all the way. But I know that Macs can be a godsend for people who don't mind the first and don't have the time or experience to agree with the second.

I find the price inhibiting too, its unheard of for me not to upgrade my computer for 3 years. But a computer crash would be far more costly to me, in my work. With a Mac, I turn it on, anytime anywhere and it works, thats all I want. With a PC, I had a computer service representative on speed dial.

You're going for longevity so you should get one of the faster ones available to you. Apple doesn't have too much of a selection on their website though, 2.1 to 2.6. I think right in the middle with 2.4 will be fine.
