Am I unusual to dislike his writing style?
I gave up on him after 30 pages or so although the subject matter (the Spanish Civil War) appealed to me.

I liked him though in Woody Allen's trip down memory lane in pre- war Paris where he appeared as a "ghost" along with a selection of other luminaries.
