Putting gold leaf on food (Food Network feature on most expensive meals)

Haha! So because it might be worth something, reguardless that it has no nutritional value you wouldn't classify it as such?

What makes you think this was my conclusion??

Pica is not well studied. But it appears that those who have it, do not arrange pins, shreds of glass, feces etc. nicely on their plates along with the usual edibles.

From the Wiki article:

Pica (play /ˈpaɪkə/ py-kə) is a medical disorder characterized by an appetite for substances largely non-nutritive (e.g., metal, clay, coal, sand, dirt, soil, feces, chalk, pens and pencils, paper, batteries, spoons, toothbrushes, soap, mucus, latex gloves, ash, gum, lip balm, contact lenses, tacks and other office supplies, etc.)[1][2] For these actions to be considered pica, they must persist for more than one month at an age where eating such objects is considered developmentally inappropriate. The name of the condition originates from the Latin word for magpie, a bird that is reputed to eat almost anything.[3] Pica is seen in all ages, particularly in pregnant women, small children, and those with developmental disabilities.

However:

However pica can also be a cultural practice not associated with a deficiency or disorder. Ingestion of kaolin (white dirt) among African-American women in the US state of Georgia shows the practice there to be a DSM-IV "culture-bound syndrome" and "not selectively associated with other psychopathology".[10] Similar kaolin ingestion is also widespread in parts of Africa.[11] Such practices may stem from health benefits such as the ability of clay to absorb plant toxins and protect against toxic alkaloids and tannic acids.[12]

Ingesting gold, silver and diamonds may have a placebo effect, though.

The choice of putting gold leaf on food is something of an asthetic sense, but Colloidal Gold and microscopic gold particles have been know to improve brain function and motor functions in clinical trials, so there may be more method than madness in doing so.
