On the question of post counts being up or down.

Posted here to avoid diverting a current thread.
I think some gauge of number of posts over a period can made by checking now and past post count numbers to this site.
As far as I can see each post has two numbers.

Post IN a thread number (the # number) and total post count number on site from way-back to now!

Hover over a post # number (in thread number) and check out the last number in what pops up.

My thread post # number here is 1, My post's total number of posts to site number is 3748447.
Hover over my post# number to see the number at end 3748447.
So, since say 26th Dec 2024, I have selected a post on that day and its count to site number is 3745126.
So, since 26th Dec 2024 to my post here, there's been 3321 posts.

3748447-3745126=3321.
I hope this is right?

One thing that is great is that some really good guys have come out of stasis.
Also, props to guys and gals who stuck around when traffic was low.

If all that is correct then it makes sense yes.

I would also be interested in posts when I joined per day, week month. Total.
Also number of posters per day week month.

I cannot follow any of this, or what you're trying to accomplish with it.

But that's OK, I don't really need to. Just pointing out that it's probably not very scrutable to many others either.

I made a claim. Now I am trying to put some numbers behind it.

The claims are :

When I joined in July 2023 traffic was low.
In the months that followed traffic increased.
Dormant posters began to join the party and are still doing so, I have no idea how that worked.

One of the guys recommended a stats site, I will try it.

It stems from Tiassa seemly making the suggestion that’s it not possible to gauge post count on this site over a period.

To find a rough gauge of number of posts to this site in say Nov last year.

In any thread pick two posts, one near the start of Nov and one near the end.
Dates 6th Nov and 30th Nov. That's roughly start and end dates.


The dates don’t have to be in the same thread.
Hover over the post's date or post # number and see the address that pops up.

The addresses below popped up for me at two posts I found in the back pages of site.

Post on 6th Nov 2024

Comparing Aug 2023 with Aug 2024 there is a rise..
I may try a longer period to get a better gauge when I get time.

That's 77 per day!

Can you assume it's counting by one? I have this piece of software that iterates by fives. When you add a new item the ID is always incremented by five. I can't think of a reason to do this other than to artificially inflate perceived usage.

I do think it's counting in ones. Why, because I did actually purposely watch the new post list, and straight away checked out one post against the next post to pop up on the new post list, and found the number was increased by one. That was how I got the idea it was counting posts to site.
If it was an increase in fives It would have puzzled me??
Watch and pounce on consecutive posts on the new posts list, checking their last number in the addresses the way I described by hovering over post date in their respected threads.

This tracking system appears suitable for monitoring chronological post number changes. Your calculation determines the gap by subtracting the thread’s # value from the full thread count. Verify the correct numbers during the hover process exactly as you mentioned. The numeric analysis shows you correct in my book.
 
foghorn's process looks valid to me. Also probably a better gauge on member activity that raw page hit numbers.

At any given time, if you look at the "members online" page, you'll see that we're getting far more page views from web crawler bots and the like than we get from actual human beings. We also get a LOT of signups or attempted signups from spammers.

I'd be interested to see how the numbers of posts per month has tracked over the last few years. Would be interesting to compare a Covid year (say 2020) with now, too. But I'm not going to do the work (at least, not now).
