Offensive Avatars

When is an avatar offensive enough to be forcibly removed by the moderators?

When does a political theme or message cross that line, and why?

For instance, how bout a Hitler moustache on a famous person. Is it possible to call that offensive and or racist, enough to constitute being removed by an administrator?

I would say only if it constitutes a personal attack on another member, or if it is inappropriately sexual.

Variable standards

It's a variable standard. Plazma was convinced to drop an avatar, once, because someone objected to it. S.A.M. was ordered to change an avatar and/or motto, once, for reasons I'll have to look up. Asguard, as a moderator, was told to drop his motto ("Kiss My Dark Side"), because it was unbecoming of a moderator. And Bells was once told to change her avatar, as I recall, for similar reasons.

I think there is a question of whether or not the political statement is legitimate. And here I don't mean whether or not the authority agrees with it. Rather, I think if someone is stupid enough to change their avatar to something intended to be offensive, and then actually makes a point of asking people what they think about it, there is good reason to conclude the whole point of it is to goad other members.

And if that's the point, I think the avatar should be treated like any other specific attempt to goad people.

Presently, however, the staff is not in agreement on what that treatment should be.

I've been thinking about making a change myself, but I thought I would run it by you guys first - what do you guys reckon?

I think that this would have multiple lines of validity.
It's a political statement.
It's satirical.
And it references an earlier work.

If you don't get the reference, click on the link

There isn't one that I can see.
Nothing, no picture.
Rien, nul, zero...

Anyhoo, is there a lump of legislative blurb somewhere on avatars, and is this part of the ongoing review of the enforcement of the rules?

Americans out of my house? (sorry work filter screens out youtube)

But Trippy, we just wanted to bring Democracy and Prosperity to New Zealand!:D

I wouldn't have a problem with it...but I imagine there'd be a bunch of people trying to pick a fight with you.

Romanes eunt Domus on IMDB
People called Americanes, they go to the house.

All things being equal, shouldn't it be the other way around?
I mean, you're still bogged down in Bicameralism - that's so...
Sumerian...
So... British!

Did you know that the RNZAF is the only airforce in the world to defeat a US carrier group in a combat exercise (only because we're all bat shit crazy).

And in Skyhawks no less.

I wouldn't have a problem with it...but I imagine there'd be a bunch of people trying to pick a fight with you.
I imagine so.

That much I knew. It rather inclines me to like a country.
My understanding is that rather than flying the length of the south island below the RADAR shadow of the Southern Alps and making a mad dash at the fleet from Cook Straight our mad airforce flew through one of the mountain passes (thus staying invisible to RADAR in amounst the jumbled returns) then flew over the Canterbury plains at an altitude of 100 feet, or something equally ridiculous, staying below RADAR the entire time, maintaining that altitude over the pacific ocean. The carrier group didn't even know they were there until the Skyhawks got within visual range, and popped up to be seen on RADAR.

Bizarre. If comedy offends you, just turn off avatars in your profile.

Yup, a bobblehead Hitler and the German rendition of the statement I am an anti-zionist - not together and separated by 2 years from each other.

Apparently Hitler bobble heads denote nazi tendencies and you cannot be anti-zionist in the German language for fear of global isolation of sciforums
