Metal monolith found in Utah desert

Deep in the Mars-like landscape of Utah's red-rock desert lies a mystery: a gleaming metal monolith in one of the most remote parts of the state.

The smooth, tall, three-sided structure was found during a helicopter survey of bighorn sheep in south-eastern Utah, officials said on Monday (local time).

A crew from the Utah Department of Public Safety and Division of Wildlife Resources spotted the gleaming object from the air on November 18 and landed to check it out during a break from their work.

They discovered a stainless-steel object standing 3 to 4 metres high, evoking a similar thing that appears in the 1968 Stanley Kubrick movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Key points:
  • A helicopter crew spotted the structure while surveying bighorn sheep
  • The monolith has been compared to a similar object in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • Because it is on federal public land, the object was placed illegally without authorisation
 
The so called "monolith" is stainless steel, while the monolith in the 2001: A Space Odyssey movie, was a black [stone?] monolith.
It's proportions were also 1:4:9 or the square of the first three digits.
:D Actually love it...great prank.

ps: In my opinion the 2001 movie [out in 1968] was and still is the greatest of all sci/fi movies ever made. I saw it 4 times in the first 12 months, then read the book.
 
Hm. It's dimensions are clearly not 1:4:9.

This pic is nearly dead-on (as proven by the act that there is virtually zero convergence of edges), so we can be confident distortion is negligible.

The neo-monolith is 152 x 760 pixels, making it exactly 5 times taller than it is wide (to within a pixel).

(Contrast with TMA-1, which is only 9/4ths as tall as it is wide.)

There's no way to tell how thick it is, but is not implausible that its thickness is either 1/4 or 1/5 of its width. (See projected shadow at bottom)

That would make its dimensions 1:4:20 or 1:5:25.

That's the exact point I was making! ;)
The "also" refers to the monolith in the previous sentence, "The so called "monolith" is stainless steel, while the monolith in the 2001: A Space Odyssey movie, was a black [stone?] monolith."
I could have made that clearer. :p
 
I predict that, in the next few days, it will be announced that its dimensions are 1:4:20 :leaf::leaf::leaf:. You heard it here first.

.....the monolith appears to be made of metal sheeting held together by screws

The Utah Bureau of Land Management said on Saturday that it had received “credible reports” that the object had been removed “by an unknown party” on Friday.

Or try to fit with a GPS location tracking device?

Probably no good though if it just ported to the 10th dimension

Some 10th dimension scientists is now busy doing exotic calculations to see if calculations and theories about lower dimensions are true

The excitement around the mysterious monoliths took a new turn after both the structures at Utah and Romania disappeared last week. On Monday, a Colorado based photographer Ross Bernards wrote a detailed post on Instagram where he gave an eye-witness account of how four men came out of nowhere and dismantled the structure and took it away on a wheelbarrow. Bernard also attached several photographs of the incident of the men breaking down the monolith.
