I just found out a file I downloaded is in this format/container/whatever. So, what's up with it, from the nerd community, and is it a good thing to install just to watch one movie?

There are way too many video formats out there. I think I installed this one or something such....highly annoying looking for codecs for every new file extension out there.

Well, uhhh, those Russians are fooling around again :p First time I see that stuff. From what the site says, I think it's decent. Install the player that will do it for you, then uninstall. No fuss.

I've watched a few mkv videos. I don't remember there being anything special about the quality, or anything great about the format, but I did remember that only one of my 5 installed video players ran it. If you don't have VLC, download it. Normally it's used for streaming videos across a lan but I find that it plays every (EVERY) format of video, evevn the ones MS Media Player decides to error out on. You'll never have to install another video player again.
