Uhhh, sorry I thought about it and I don't know...call me thick in the head.
Consider the following:
1.) Who has the time to come to a message board and post?
Usually those who are in high school or college, due to the fact that school generally does not occupy as much of one's time as the "real world". Most of the younger folks, i.e. 9-13, tend to use instant messaging more often than message boards.
2.) In college, which gender generally is more likely to use the internet, and thus, message boards?
Male. By a rather large margin, most students who major in a science are male, and by far, the internet is utilized much more heavily by students in the sciences (
e.g. Computer Science, Electrical Engineering (to look up datasheets for circuit components), etc.) than those in the Arts, which has a largely female enrollment.
Conclusions:
Therefore, the above provides a possible explanation as to why the majority of message board's members are male. However, one may ask why are there females on this board at all? My conjecture, is that the members of a science message board such as sciforums are highly unlikely to be exclusively composed of males (
speaking from a strictly statistical standpoint), thus, the few females that post are the small percentage that have managed to somehow gain an interest in science. This interest is most likely due to their parents pursuit of such endeavors, and emphasis of such topics during early childhood. (
However, this is just a conjecture.)
Alternatively, they could simply be like the other psychotics on this board, possessing and some combination of
idée fixes, pet theories, and aberrant personality traits that only draw attention from the masses when exhibited in an anonymous online forum. I'm sure you could think of a few female (
and quite a few male) posters on this board who fit this mold.
