low level programming of U.S.B ports- simple question

I was using a mouse for awhile until the right button stopped working. Now every other mouse i plug in causes erratic behavior, not enough to be unusable but enough to be annoying. When i plug the other mouse in it works fine. This happens regardless of OS- meaning it is happens before the OS takes over. Linux or Windows.

Explain that one.
 
Not DOS it is at the hardware level. I am assuming that since it happens on formatted drive and regardless of the OS.
 
Sounds like the USB port is bad. Does this happen with all of your usb ports? Do you have another usb device you could plug into the port?
 
It is just weird. I used this mouse on a PC and a laptop and the same thing has happened. Could a mouse corrupt a port?
 
So far XP, Vista and 2 distributions of Linux show the same behavior - when mouse is idle it sits there when i move it it goes where i want THEN wil fly across the screen super fast like its running away.

This is truely amazing, but annoying.

I know for sure it is because i used one particular mouse and had to stop using it because the right button stopped working and now every other mouse i plug into this laptop goes crazy AND when i plug the broken mouse back in everything is fine.
 
so, what you are saying is that this one mouse is screwed up on all those other systems. is that correct?
if so, then the mouse is bad. throw it away and get another one.
personally i recommend an optical mouse.
it has no balls. heh, heh, heh, it wasn't meant as a joke though.
therefor it doesn't need a pad and it won't gum up.
 
Not entirely. The one broken (usb -MS Laser600 - no ball and real nice) mouse effected the USB port on two PCs regardless of OS and after numerous formats and now when i plug in other mouse even if it is a MS mouse it is erratic but useable. When i plug in Laser 600 mouse it works perfectly except for the broken right button which has nothing to do with this problem.

It is hard to explain but that is the problem. Never have i seen anything like this or heard about it.
 
Is your table "reflective", are you using a mouse pad for you optical/laser mouse?

okay, is THIS what you are saying:
all these computers work fine until this one mouse comes along.
as soon as you plug this one mouse into a USB port on any of the machines the pointer on the screen starts acting erratically, as if the mouse is bad. this happens to all the computers you use this one mouse on.
when you plug a known good (preferably a new) mouse into the same port on any of the machines the pointer on the screen still behaves erratically as if the "bad" mouse was still connected.

does the above describe your situation?
