Losing your religion

...what I was reading was mans creation and not god's.
This is key.
We only have the word (via broken telephone) from other men that this is the (transcribed and interpreted) word of God. Since it's the word of man, it really should be scrutinized for veracity, like any other document.

If God would like to establish (or re-establish) personal provenance, he could, say, burn a message into the cover of every Bible on the planet, saying "I am God, and I approve this message."

(I mean, that form of communication is not entirely unprecedented for him in modern times...)

Never found religion reasonable or believable. I got asked to not come back to Sunday School when Mom made us get up, get dressed and get out to church. The fact that she and the Y-donor went back (or stayed in his case) in base was a clear signal to me. So the first Sunday we went I was asked to not come back. Why? I asked the Sunday school teacher where Noah's kids got their spouses after the Flood.

We were required to go to a "service of your choice" on Sunday when I was in boot camp (♫In the Summer of '69♫)*. I had a deal with a couple of other recruits that if we started snoring the others would wake them up. Learned to sleep seating on a hard wood bench.

I was not informed. I was told what the Bible meant, who Jesus was, what god was and what my goals should be.

That's actually more than many believers, I would guess. I think maybe you would be unique to me in that you aren't American. Uninformed believers and believers in general are more prevalent in America I would think.

When I accepted god and Jesus I was ignorant on what the Bible was. Same when I rejected it. I must have been convinced in my heart that what I was reading was mans creation and not god's.
I think that it is common. It has always reminded me of Santa Claus. As a kid I was never told by my parents about Santa in any serious way, and I had to be careful with kids my age because they were told that. They believed it without question. Then when they get to a certain age, they are told that was made up, there is no Santa and again, they accept it without question. All the while not knowing what Santa actually is. I always thought it weird that they never seemed to have even a mild curiosity about what Santa is. How can you explain to your kid that there is no Santa while passing them on street corners, seeing them in commercials, sitting on their laps at the mall? Santa does exist, the question is what is it?

I got lucky, I was right. Now I know better, it is much more complicated than that but the basic theme was correct. A series of stories passed down and adopted and adapted. Some history in there sure. Some.
Well, of course, like I said, I disagree with your conclusion. I don't think there is any real evidence of that and lots of evidence against it. The question is, what does it say? What is it?

No religion has ever remained true, even to itself. That isn't religion's fault, of course. It's people. So, the same applies to any human endeavor.

Seriously? They couldn't answer that? Amazing. I only went to church once as a kid and I was backhanded by my grandmother for telling the preacher or pastor or whatever he was, that he could go to hell. I ran home in the cold spring rain and never went back.

I wouldn't recommend anyone go to any religious place of worship for any reason. It's a scam. A farce and a facade. Dog and pony show.

Out of the frying pan into the fire. Public education, church, politics, military. They are all the same to me. It doesn't matter where you live. USA or anywhere else.

That doesn't mean religion isn't crap, just that it's as crappy as some other human creations.

In that context, it means religion is crap, and so is most everything else. I think of it like a good meal. It smells good, it looks good, you can't wait to sink your teeth into it, but the stuff that comes out the other end is crap. That's the history of, not just religion but mankind. If something doesn't gain mass appeal it's left alone, but once it gains mass appeal or the state gets involved what comes out the other end is crap. The road to hell, as they say, is paved with good intentions. Religion, politics, science, charity . . . just tools to be corrupted if doing that is profitable.

First, I want to make it plain: This thread, as well as its predecessor [Dear Believers, prove your god or gods is/aren't just fiction(s)], has proven very interesting and illuminating. I came to appreciate all the various contributions. However, I do not believe there is one specific insight that demonstrates itself to be a decisive and persuasive opinion.

(OBSERVATION #1)

I would like to give a very honorable mention to "Yazata" for applying the "Principle of Sufficient Reason" (PSR) [Gottfried Leibniz (1646–1716)]: (Paraphrased): Nothing happens without a cause or reason. However, this premise must be taken with a grain of salt. The PSR is a double-edge Sword. Leibniz was the father of the Binary Code. And thinking such as he did he either saw the PSR in support of his concepts (1) or not (0). Leibniz used PSR to further his belief that nothing is beyond understanding. The solution may not be known yet, but along the linear timeline, it will eventually become clear.

(OBSERVATION #2)

Again, the entire idea behind the concepts of a "First Cause," the "Creator," the "Ultimate Intelligent Power of the Universe," or the "Supreme Being" (etc) are, indeed, beyond the bio-electric (Grey Cell) investigation, consciousness, reality, and the capability of human understanding. These entities (if we can call them that) are not universally defined. YES! Ultimately it can be classified as a "Metaphysical" Inquiry [beyond scientific methodologies; but even that much is in dispute by the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS)].

(COMMENT)

Solving the metaphysical questions of reality, the life force, workings of the mind, and influences of our culture will eventually come to the forefront of science. But it will not come about without discussions such as these.

As it says on the tin, if you are now a non believer how did you lose your faith?
For me, it was when I was Huēyi Tlahtoāni and watched helplessly as Portuguese Conquistadors raped our women, slaughtered our men and placed the children into slavery. At that point, I knew there was something inherently wrong with Christianity.

Looks like a red flag
