I want to find a program that works like Kazaa but doesn't require you to install the GAIN adware at the same time, which has screwed any computer i've seen it on. you can't delete it, you can't bypass it, you're screwed if you install kazaa. Anybody know an alternative?

There was Kazaalite, which had the spyware removed. Kazaa shut them down, but if you can find a place to download 2.43, it still works well, and is what I use. http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/archive/index.php/f-13
But beware, the spyware asswipes have found a way to exploit your machine from that P2P network. I recently had an infection from just that. Spybot and Ad Aware weren't able to get all of it. But MS new anti-spyware tool took it all out. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

FastTrack is the only one that seems to work worth a damn with dialup. If you're not stuck with dialup, you may have a better alternative. I don't.

Narc!
Shut the fuck up and take it to where someone gives a shit.
FBI headquarters are two doors down.

Edit:

Anyway, there's nothing illegal about filesharing, Einstein.

Hey Rubiks, have you ever: borrowed a rented movie from a friend, watched it, then returned it? Have you ever borrowed and copied music CDs? Have you ever copied CDs and given them to friends and family? Do you ever tape or Tivo television, and not watch the commercials? If yes to any of these, you're just as dirty as the rest of us.

[A mansion, somewhere, day. The agent has taken the boys for a ride and arrived here. He leads them to the main gate]
Detective: This is the home of Lars Ulrich, the drummer for Metallica. [they approach a bush] Look. There's Lars now, sitting by his pool. [he's seen sitting on the edge of a chaise longue, his face in his hands, softly sobbing]
Kyle: What's the matter with him?
Detective: This month he was hoping to have a gold-plated shark tank bar installed right next to the pool, but thanks to people downloading his music for free, he must now wait a few months before he can afford it. [a close-up of Lars sobbing] Come. There's more. [leads them away. Next seen is a small airport at night] Here's Britney Spears' private jet. Notice anything? [a shot of Britney boarding a plane, then stopping to look at it before entering] Britney used to have a Gulfstream IV. Now she's had to sell it and get a Gulfstream III because people like you chose to download her music for free. [Britney gives a heavy sigh and goes inside.] The Gulfstream III doesn't even have a remote control for its surround-sound DVD system. Still think downloading music for free is no big deal?
Kyle: We... didn't realize what we were doing, eh...
Detective: That is the folly of man. Now look in this window. [they are at another mansion, and they look inside a picture window] Here you see the loving family of Master P. [He's shown tossing a basketball to his wife while his kid tries to catch it] Next week is his son's birthday and, all he's ever wanted was an island in French Polynesia. [his mom lowers the ball and gives it to the boy, who smiles, picks it up and drops it. It rolls away and he goes after it]
Kyle: So, he's gonna get it, right?
Detective: I see an island without an owner. If things keep going the way they are, the child will not get his tropical paradise.
Stan: [apologetically] We're sorry! We'll, we'll never download music for free again!
Detective: [somberly, dramatically] Man must learn to think of these horrible outcomes before he acts selfishly or else... I fear... recording artists will be forever doomed to a life of only semi-luxury.

DC++ is best if you have enough hard drive space and a decent connection.
The file-sharing for which you are inquiring is ILLEGAL.
False. FUD.
Downloading music from these ILLEGAL file-sharing networks is COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT.
Only if the music being downloaded is copyrighted (not all of it is). And who said anything about downloading music?

Federal law provides severe civil and criminal penalties for the unauthorized reproduction, distribution, rental or digital transmission of copyrighted sound recordings. (Title 17, United States Code, Sections 501 and 506). The FBI investigates allegations of criminal copyright infringement and violators will be prosecuted.
Last time I checked the FBI doesn't have global authority. There's no FBI here...

You cana be sentenced to 5 YEARS IN PRISON and a $250,000 FINE.
More FUD.

Yes, Alpha is right, not all the music on these file sharing networks is copywrited. I will also note that it is not illegal to download music that you already own. If you buy a CD and it gets scratched, you can legally download that album all you want.

Kazaa will always come with some spyware...use DC++...

No, not Kazaa lite K++. Absolutely no spyware. I found it really is the best P2P FS program. It gives you access to the largest P2P network, has IP blockers, gives you priority download, no spy, ..

So? let them monitor. K++ has IP blocker list which (supposidly) hides your computer from a list -- I guess it makes it harder for them to track you down. In any case, I don't do anything illegal on Kazaa anyway.

Yes, and they have absolutely no idea what a connection through an anonymous proxy server is. Get real
That IP-blocker blocks only known RIAA & Co IP addresses.
Anyways, I'm (of course) not against anyone using Kazaa,
use it, if it works for you, not my problem.
