Kasparov in jail

Great chess player, but also an ardent communist who was leading movements to bring the old Iron Curtain back. I always have wondered why Kasparov changed his name. His real name is Garry Weinstein. Weinstein/Kasparov, what's the difference?

I don't think it is right to be jailed for one's beliefs. So I will argue for Kasparov's release in Russia just as I would for right-wing extremists in Germany who deny the holocaust. Both Kasparov and the holocaust deniers are crazy, but they have a right to say what they want to say.

Hum I don't totaly agree with you there.
To cite Karl Popper here: 'Democracy sometimes has to be protected with undemocratic tools'. That means when undemocratic voices are treadning democracy then democracy should have the right to protect itself.

Kasparov should be jailed and court has ruled it right. He is a anti-national propagandist who undermines issues of Russian citizen over illegal immigrants'.

i saw Kasparov on Colbert's show. he may possibly be the best chess player of all time, but he is not presidential looking. he sounds like a crazy protestor... neurotic, impulsive... he has no chance.

In other words, he sounds like a chess player. Some of the craziest damn people I've ever known :)

No, you're taking him out of context. I can't see Popper agreeing with the extent of Putin's actions -- jailing dissidents? (possibly) Killing embarassing political enemies? Putin isn't protecting Russian democracy, he's consolidating his power base. Kasparov is hardly a threat.

I wasn't refering to Putin...cause he leading a general non-democracy. (Still Russia doesn't realy has a history of 'Western-democracy')
I just meant that within a democracy sometimes the leaders of this democracy should take undemocratic actions so that the democracy can continue.

You must have him confused with somebody else.

Kasparov was jailed for taking part in a pro-democracy demonstration.

My bad, I interpreted it in the context of this thread.
And I agree with that.

What Popper have you read? All I read was Conjectures and Refutations, which is fascinating, and I've been meaning to read the Open Society and its Enemies.

it wasn't a pro-democracy demonstration, it was ANTI-putin and FOR Illegal immigrants' rights...and he was doing so without the approval for the protest march.

Regardless of what you think of Kasparov or the Communist Party in Russia it does appear that Putin's party is gearing up for some massive voter fraud. From today's Guardian

Local administration officials have called in thousands of staff on their day off in an attempt to engineer a massive and inflated victory for President Vladimir Putin and his United Russia party. Voters are being pressured to vote for United Russia or risk losing their jobs, their accommodation or bonuses, the Guardian has been told in numerous interviews with byudzhetniki (public sector workers), students and ordinary citizens.

Doctors, teachers, university deans, students and even workers at psychiatric clinics have been warned they have to vote. Failure to do so will entail serious consequences, they have been told.

Analysts say the pressure is designed to ensure a resounding win for the United Russia party and for Putin, who heads its party list. The victory would give him a public mandate to maintain ultimate power in the country as "National Leader" despite being unable to stand for a third term as president in March.

From elsewhere on the site

Both opposition and independent sources say that local governors have been given quotas of votes that have to be cast for United Russia, Mr Putin's party. Public-sector workers, including doctors, teachers and university deans, have been told to vote for the party or face the sack and loss of bonuses. Tutors have told their students to photograph their ballot paper alongside their passport in the voting booth with their mobile phones. If they refuse they may not make the grade in their examinations. Even the country's 4 million homeless people are being conscripted into service - for the price of a free meal.

I just both te last one. But I had philosophy at university. And Popper is one of the standards you should learn about, no?

By the way...I think it is interesting: us judging the Russian political history.
I think it is not so easy for Western people to judge on that subject...since Russia was always lead by absolutism. I don't know if democracy as we know it will ever have a chance there.
A prof I took class from described it this way: Nowadays Russian politics is trying to make a square of something that has always been a circle. :)

these are all lies

Yeah thats what putin says to, he said the US is resposible for the independent electoral commision of some sort not going to russia to watch the elections, the leader of the commision said that was bullshit they were denied visas.

Putin is one hell of a bullshitter, & only drunken russians are listening to him, the guy is raping your country & you all think he is a wonderful prez.

you are the one raping the country. Putin is an amazing president and if it wasn't for consitution, we would want him for life as president.

Don't worry he'll throw that constitution out the window before you know it.

Putin has repeatedly stated that he will not run for 3rd term...it both saddens me and strengthens my beliefs in him.

Western propaganda of how evil my Putin is, are all lies.
