I heard Wierd Al's satire of American Pie (my, my, Mr. Anikan guy, maybe Vader someday later, now you're just a small fry..) and it got me thinking about Jedis as I was driving (I was on a two hour trip.)

Anyway, I seem to recall that Anikan was all tormented and had to hide his marrage because Jedi's weren't allowed to marry. Yet, it seems that the ability to use the force is genetically transmitted!!!!

Luke Skywalker is able to use the force because he is Vader's son. When it seems he is lost to them, Yoda says, "There is another", referring to Princess Laia who is also Vader's child.

Obviously, they are aware of the genetic component in the ability to use the force, yet they ban marriage among Jedis. What the fuck?

The problem is constraining the sexual impulse once it is unleashed. Generally speaking, sexually active Jedi do not tend to be good Jedi. A lot of the fallen Jedi which became terrible Sith lords were preoccupied with sex. Even Luke in the new books is beginning to recognize the nonsense of the Jedi order as it is now.

Moreover, Jedi can marry and have sex even in the prequel eras, it is just heavily frowned upon and almost a certain path to not getting to become a master. If one is a padawan when one begins, one also faces the fact that one may be asked to never take the position of knight. A notable exception was Ki-Adi Mundi, who was a master and had several wives, as his species needed as many males as it could get.

Don't forget Princess Leai. As mentioned in the OP, when they thought Luke was lost to them, Yoda said, "There is another" He was refering to Leai, and based on what? Either he had met her and knew she was "strong with the force" (which is further evidence of a genetic connection), or just assumed it based on who her father was.

Actually the Jedi code forbidd attachment, not neccesarily marriage or children. Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi had several wives and children as is Cerean custom. Jedi are hardly chaste (the state of not having sexual realtions) but are often celibate (the sate of not marrying). Anakin had already skated the ice several times and was close to being cast out of the order as it were and Padme's politcal career would be ruined in the senate if it were known she married a Jedi. That it why Anakin and Padme hid their marriage.

As for the Code in question, in it's current form it was only apraximately 1500 years old. It was a treatise written by a jedi scholor on how a Jedi should strive to act and over time Thesis became Law. If you read the books you will see the New Jedi have modified the code a little. Kept the parts that works and discard the parts that alienated themselves form the people they protect.

I read the original novel right after the first Star Wars came out when I was in junior high or whatever, and haven't read any of the others.

Are the various novels in keeping with the history as presented in the movies?

Quite a few of them are. They don't mess with the movies at all. Like Shadows of the Empire is a must read if you wonder why Liea, Chewie and Lando agree to Luke's plan to free Han. Luke goes from competent to full on Jedi Knight in the span of that book. He even manhandles an android that would give Data a run for his money.

The novels expand on the story as presented and in some places clear up a lot of the history of the the Rise of the Empire, Rebellion, and New Jedi Order. In fact in the whole thing only one real mess up is made, but it is such a harmless one that fans and canon alike don't really mind. One can believe that Lando Calrissian would drink Hot Chocolate and be responsible for getting Luke hooked on it.
