I prefer no time limit to editing my posts. 30 minutes is way too short

With the big posts I post, I need more time to edit them. 30 minutes is not enough time.

In my opinion, there should be no time limit on editing posts but if you could at least make it 24 hours or something sensible that would be a big improvement over 30 minutes.

I believe this is a limit of the forum software, and unfortunately not something we can alter - I'm not 100 percent sure though

Thanks for the reply Kittamaru. Any relation to Kobayashi Maru - the Star Trek no-win training scenario?

I suggest you check because most forum software have an administrator control to alter edit times or even not to impose a time limit but leave editing open forever. It won't necessary be a power that all forum moderators have though. Since it is a board-wide function, it will be a power reserved for the highest level of forum administrator.

There will be an administrator's control panel or page with a whole list of forum features which can be adjusted. Look for it there.

To the first question - nah, the name is something I've had for ages, long before I came to love Star Trek :)

As for the admin controls - that is possible, though it is something James would have to look into (standard mods dont' have access to the admin control panel)

Yes, please! I need more time to delete posts. At least 24 hours. Sometimes we post things in an exuberant state and regret them later.

I sometimes make mistakes and would like more time as well to rectify my errors. Last night was a perfect example. I posted the wrong city as to where the riots were taking place and could not, after less than 5 minutes , edit that post. So perhaps a longer, say 10 hours or so would be a better time frame to edit posts, that would be more helpful to many here.

What is the down side to giving more editing time?

*tilt* It prevented you from editing it in under five minutes? That... well, I don't THINK that should be the case... anywho, I'll let James know to look into it

I just went back and reviewed my time that I had on trying to edit. I see now that I had about an hour or so to edit so again I am wrong in thinking I only had 5 minutes but still think that more time is needed to edit our posts if possible. Time flies when your here having fun.

I think 24 hours would be a better time limit UNLESS, some one has quoted you in discussion. Not OK to then go back and counter their point in the original post. Do that in a new post and if they were correct in their correction, thank them.

I am a little dyslexic and need a few hours to forget my text before I cease to read my post as it should be, instead of how it actually is. It is terrible when what I posted is lacking a "not" that I soon after posting read as if the not is there - in the post.

That sounds about right to what I've seen as well.

I agree - I think that a 1 hour window is a bit prohibitive... personally, I think 24 hours is perfect since, as Billy said - sometimes what you write and what you are reading as you write are two different things... it isn't until you re-read it much later that the "forehead slap" moment occurs

Thank you for considering this idea that was mentioned to you increasing the editing time. Say could you go into my post and change it from Boston to Baltimore? If not thanks either way.

Done and done :) I also changed it in the title as well (which is something I've noticed cannot be done normally even within the edit window- has to be done via the mod CP)

Thank you for your time. Is there a way to edit titles?

I have often wished for a longer time, but being able to go back and change posts indefinitely is also a problem, since 1) at that point there are likely replies that contain the original text (and therefore become nonsensical) and 2) there should be a penalty for thoughtless posting. Asking a mod to change posts that have serious problems is a good compromise, I think.

Hey Kit, can you fix it so I can edit other peoples' posts?
(Some of them are in dire need of it).
;)

if i remember correctly there was a problem with people using the editing and deleting features dishonestly to cover up things they said to troll and thats the reason the limit was imposed.

Yep, I believe there must by necessity be a time limit.
I'm often making errors, "too much haste and not enough time" but if you do come across something that was unintentional, [as I did with a date the other day] and its past edit time, just post a simple retraction and a reason if any. I don't see to much of a big deal over it.
