How to upload a gif as an avatar?

I've tried to upload a gif as an avatar, but it appears as a still pic. :? The extension shows as .gif - just wondering if I'm doing something wrong, or does the site not permit gifs as avatars? (I've seen a few members here though with ''animated'' avatars.) TIA for your help.
 
No idea.

I had mine for years, before the new software was adopted.

I have been scared to try to change it since then in case it stops working..

A gif isn't necessarily an animated gif. Are you sure yours is animated?

Yea, I wonder if it can’t be done since the upgrade. I’ve tried uploading with the .gif extension, but it’s not working.

Good point. It’s a gif I’m looking to add. I’m not sure a regular animated pic would upload (like Bells’)

Now that you've seen it I'm going back to the old one:) They were supposed to be moving like they were dancing.
 
The one I want to upload is a bird sitting on a branch, but another bird is flying up to join it, then flies down. You’d have to see it lol ;)

I found this

As with my old man typing profile pic I downloaded from a site

Selected it when change photo

Did see File to big but when I exit it was there working

File name is Wegs butterfly.gif

Download to your computer and select when edit profile

Hope you like and it works

Thanks - I had taken these steps when I tried to upload a gif of my own originally, but it didn't work. I tried yours, and it didn't work. By ''work,'' I mean...it displays like a still pic.

That one didn't work for me either. Maybe it's too big? When I tried to use it as my avatar it didn't move. When I click on it on my computer it does move so it's just a sciforums avatar issue.
 
Ah, it could be too big, but it's not telling that the file is too big. It uploads, but remains still. Well, that's a shame, I like that one. :redface:
 
Hey look, it worked! So, it's a size thing.

Edit, I changed it back...but I tried your ''bells'' avatar, and it worked.

I would like this one, too ^^ But, the file is too large. It's so perfect though.
It's the size that is the issue, so I'll have to find some smaller gifs. Thanks for the help!
 
Yay, I did it. It is a size thing for sure, I had to find one like around 200 x 160. Even though the dimensions on sci forums say 200x200 (at least).
