How often do you type out long replies, and then decide not to submit them?

I do it quite a bit, and I can't be the only one. Can you imagine the shit that has been said, but has not been said? What a read some of it would have been, good or bad.

These days, the most common reason (there are others) that I decide not to submit a reply that I've typed out is because upon reflection, I suddenly realize that I just can't be fucked getting into it all after all. Nevertheless, the exercise is almost always still useful in a 'dear diary' sort of way, and any research I might have done often comes in handy at some other time anyway.

Some of the contributions I've withheld might have stirred up a hilarious amount of shit, actually, and others probably bordered on infraction-worthy. But that's the great thing about forums isn't it? You always have a chance to think long and hard before you open your mouth, because it's a forced multistage process.

Yes I know the feeling.:D

Probably many people submit their posts to critical examination.
Sometimes I used to post and later to delete it because I wasn't pleased enough with the post I had typed out a few hours before.

Yes. As I get near the end of the post I either:

1) realize when I have to look something up to make my point that I don't really know as much as I thought I did when I started the reply, and should leave the discussion alone and just lurk and learn

2) think that this could become more than just one reply for me, and I really just wanted to give the one thought and let it go

3) halfway through I have to look up something that was said to reference it, and I realize that I misunderstood the whole point and almost made myself look really stupid.

its the moderators...they instill fear in me of being banned or rediculed or provoked to be banned, thus not all the replies are submitted.

This is one reason since I've been warned.
But another reason is I don't um feel like what I type is going to be taken the right way...

I frequently formulate replies in my mind while I am working night shift and then decide that I really do not have the time to engage so many topics in debate at the time as I read and participate on several forums. It surely does help pass the time while I am about my chosen occupation. Does that count? All those posts that I carefully craft mentally and then do not lob in? :D

I write for a living so I'm accustomed to the discipline of planning, writing and editing. I very seldom decide not to post a long reply because by the time it's gotten that long I've reviewed it from every perspective. But short ones that can be shot from the hip... Sometimes I look at them sitting out there on the board, don't like the way they look, and decide to delete them.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say NO it doesn't count unless you've typed it up first.:D

How about this scenario, You just spent 30 minutes typing up a reply and your system freezes up and then crashes or has to be rebooted and you've lost what you had typed. Do you try and rewrite the reply or do you blow it off?

Or, how many times have you submitted a reply and then wished you could delete it?

Sometimes I have actually written out responses with pen and paper on my break at work then decided I was either too tired to log on when I got home or that the window of opportunity in the discussion had passed on the thread.

It has happened yet my system auto-saves every few minutes and when I was back on-line I was amazed that I could access my response and only had to rewrite the last few sentences. On earlier computers, I was left swinging in the breeze and if I did bother to rewrite, it would be an 'executive summary.' :p

Very seldom. Like Fraggle, I am pretty much self-editing and if I post something a bit unseemly, I most probably am well aware that I am breaking character and am monitoring to see who knows how to read sign, lol... :D

Geez. Forum upgrade COULD have allowed more than 3 smilies in a post for those of us who are of expressive nature.....mumble, grumble. Sorry KJ. I deleted the image from your reply.

Maybe one post out of five I never send.
