How is he still living and conscious?

I was watching a video on liveleak.com of a Syrian kid that got his jaw blown off from a rocket attack. In the video, he is not bleeding badly, but has no mouth and no jaw left. He is conscious and sitting up. How could he have not bled to death before they got him to the hospital and how could he just be sitting up?

I will warn you that the video is extremely graphic and not to watch it if you are the faint at heart.

Maybe the blast cautarised the wounds and as long as brain, spinal cord to c6, heart and lungs are intact with no major bleeding someone can be alive and concious even though they are in reality dead if other organs are destroyed.
 
...also, sometimes when persons receive a severe injury like that the circulatory system slams shut in the affected area minimizing blood loss. Many of the more serious repercussions of that type of trauma will not evidence themselves until some time after the event.
 
The human body has some pretty crazy survival mechanisms, I've done a lot of research on these sorts of things. Some people might fall 20 feet, land the wrong way and end up dead or crippled for life. Others might fall 100 feet or more and end up surviving with virtually no permanent damage. We may not be the strongest, toughest creatures in nature, but don't discount the wonders of evolution. I have to say though, if my own jaw got blown off in a war situation and I didn't feel I had anything special to keep living for, I don't think I'd be terribly pleased about surviving it, let alone remaining conscious the whole time.
 
CptBork, I got the same sort of feeling looking at that poor kid. He doesn't look overjoyed to still be alive. Wretched video, damned war.
 
Yeah, I feel for the kid. How the hell do they repair damage of that extreme extent? I saw something similar on rotten.com, a motorcycle accident.
