About time they built a new one, the old one was over 800 years old.
I don't think their god would take kindly to them offering a patch-up job in dedication to him.
I glad no one was killed or hurt though.

Maybe God doesn't like Christians.

(Is it too soon to joke like this? The damage to this wonder of medieval architecture is a terrible loss to the cultural heritage of the world, let alone the people of Paris.)

I would tend to agree, yet over mankinds history, so many have been lost. It seems almost inevitable that some sort of disaster would befall every wonder, eventually. I spent time in Kiev and learned of all the architectural wonders that city once possessed, turned to dust during ww2. Most of those types of building were destroyed all over Europe. At least with this structure, they've promised to rebuild.
 
This is a terrible loss, and apparently well-wishers have already donated more than a billion dollars.

I just couldn't help wondering how many starving children that would feed - and what's really important to people in the first world.

Just on that point I find it strange that all of the news I heard for about 3 days was about the rescue of the treasures

Not until the 3rd day did I hear anyone mention anything along the lines of
"Thank god no-one was killed"

I do understand 1 firefighter is in hospital but I am unsure of his condition

At the moment I heard about that it did appear like injury (or whatever it is he is in for because that was not clear) was life threatening

Most of the time the relics took centre stage

God's day of rest was Sunday, he called in Monday to take the day off and then this happened. The word on the street is that he is quite embarrassed.

But he won't lose his job over it. I thought he'd be fired when his kid was promoted over a lot of better qualified and more experienced candidates for the Chief Operations Officer job. But he has friends in high places.

In recent years, the destruction caused by Isis comes to mind (if we need something else to add to their list of atrocities). Not to mention the theft of priceless artifacts from Baghdad when the US went in to topple Saddam.

The deliberate destruction is worse than the accidental losses, I think.

Going back a little, the burning of the Great Library at Alexandria probably set human progress back quite a ways.

In principle, we could do both - feed the hungry and save the cathedral. What if we were to divert some resources away from, say, the manufacture of nuclear weapons? Nah. That's crazy talk!
 
i think it would be nice, though to some, somewhat trivial, that all interested governments donate 1 million francs to the re-build as a gesture toward higher education and cultural preservation(& religious freedom and cultural diversity)[not withstanding the scientific architectural importance of the building].

Apparently Emmanuel Macron had a brain fart idea to have it rebuilt as a multi religious centre

Like that works everywhere it has been tried

Even this 3 neuron atheist can pick a few defects in such a plan (?)
