We may all have to login again if they do a software upgrade to correct the problems. As far as what you say, I think making the content as interesting as possible is better than always being right. For example the raciest Οzymandias has not been banned yet, because it's important that his ideas are shown for what they really are. But I have to say reading his crap is becoming tiresome.

as long as there is no overt hate and violence proposed, bigoted opinions are still opinions and can be allowed to stand

for most of us, the freak show provides some entertainment value
for others, it aids in honing arguments against prejudice and stupidity

the thread will probably end up in cess but until then go have some fun with it

True, I've been following that thread from the beginning and for the most part it's been a good thread. I think the OP was for the wrong reasons, however that didn't stop some very good dialog. Οzymandias didn't get involved until there was already about 200 posts.

FYI if all you ever do is click on "todays posts" and go direct to threads, you won't know anything about the updates. First I've seen of it.

So long as mods practice what they preach we'll see improvement, and people won't report posts if they go ignored.

Why would anyone buy an unfunded non-profit?

Some possible reasons:
For the fun of it.
For social influence.
As an act of altruism.
Because someone is interested in freedom of speech and understands that free avenues need to be provided for that.

The forum has advertising for non-members or when you aren't logged in. I guess that generates some income. I have no idea how much.

The adverts to my knowledge aren't here to make millions for the site owners, it just aids in covering the costs of maintaining the site (Possible software upgrades), housing it on the servers, keeping the domain name etc. (Plazma's Ferrari fund I guess is empty)

Maybe he should have a Karma fund, you just can't find many electric cars like that.

How does a site that generates about $55 a day become worth about $40,000?

And how did you come up with this web site?

I just typed 'value of sciforums' into my search engine and it was on the first page of responses. My brother is into building webpages and selling domain names, and so I became aware of some of the e-commerce that goes on.

I'm quite sure they are making a profit. Why else would they go to the trouble of maintaining several of these forums?

It's a business. Business need to make profit, not even out the expenses and income.

Non profit businesses don't. They work just to keep everything paid for, not to earn more than is needed but enough to maintain themselves. Many medical businesses are like that today.

Many so called "non-profit" businesses do not only earn enough to maintain themselves, in fact. It just means that profit is not the aim of the business, many do try make as much money as possible but shove any profit back into improving/expanding themselves.
