The only thing they have that holds them together is their hatred of Trump.
And the New Deal agenda - the policies and governance of a liberal democracy, as favored by more than 2/3 of the American citizenry.
I don't see anyone attracting that much loyalty within the Democratic Party.
Of course not. The Democratic Party largely comprises adults who wish to govern themselves. Personal loyalty like that is for organized criminal gangs.
The Republicans said much the same of Clinton during his Presidency. Congratulations, you just crossed party lines.
The Republicans said false things. I am saying true things.
There is a difference between true claims and false claims, out in the real world. They are not interchangeable, or equivalent.
And that difference is Republican, by and large: the Republicans inhabit a fantasy world, a world of falsehood,
in which even obvious idiocy is believed and repeated as long as it is delivered to them by the correct sources,
in which reversals of opinion and contradictory assertions are accepted without question, routinely.
Quite possibly the male American Republican voter is the most childish, gullible, politically incompetent adult man on this planet. They panic, they flail and rant, they believe stuff a twelve year old could see through - and look at who they voted into the Presidency.
I don't think that DJT's supporters love him so much as they distrust the Democrats.
They love him, just as they loved W, and Reagan.
After the disaster (whatever it is) their handlers will rewrite all this, of course. When was the last time you heard a Republican media figure praise W as they did in 2003/2004? That's all shoved into the amnesia closet now - the entire 8 years of W is just kind of skipped over, in Republican rhetoric. So will Trump be. Ten years from now they will be pretending what we all have seen these past couple of years never happened, or somehow involved "both sides" of some kind (They are already trying to sell the idea that nobody really wanted to vote for Trump, they just had no good choice).
But there will be another W, another Reagan, another Trump, as long as there is a Republican Party as we see it now. The Republican Party is a deliberately and purposefully organized shitpile of bigots, fundies, and imbeciles - it didn't get that way suddenly in the summer of 2016, and it won't magically become something else in 2020, or 2024, or any time in the near future.
