Just upgraded to a 7800GS AGP and 2GB.

Bought this game last night and spent a couple of hours playing it so far. It took me forever just to decide on my race/class/birthsign.

I haven't played an Elder Scrolls game before so I am still getting used to it. It certainly looks good. I will play a couple more days before I rate it.

I've played this game too much. gonna take a break.

I would highly recommend getting good at alchemy... at the least get to journeyman level. Spiddal sticks... can't get enough spiddal sticks for those fantastic poisons!

Armour lessens the effectiveness of your magic, especially at earlier stages of the game. My first char was a pure mage - really powerful but don't let things get close!

I'm playing as a sort of warrior 'Dark Monk' now. Martial arts, marksmanship, heavy armour, sneak, alchemy...

I didn't know the 7800 came in AGP. Which card did you have before?

There is really no gimp class or charactor model. All skills can go to master, doesn't matter if it's a major or minor. For example, my minor skill speechcraft is over 65 because I play every mini-game on every NPC I met. My spell effectiveness is at 95% now with armor level at 30.

The 7800gs is the best agp card available now I believe. It came out not too long ago. My previous card was very old (9600SE ati). I would not have been able to play oblivion with it.

I have been enjoying the game. I think I have played too many mmorpgs as I find myself thinking I should be teaming up with others to finish the quests in this large, detailed world.

I'm playing a nightblade. I still have a long way to go. Only level 9.

Would any of you mind posting the requirement specs off of the box for me before I drive 40 miles to get it and find out my computer won't support it? I have a HP 2.6 Ghz processor & 1 GB of RAM, IBM compatible (not Mac), but my graphics card is integrated and only about 2 years old. My local Wal-mart doesn't have the game yet, I guess. The fucktards.

The reccommended specs are actually the minimum specs. In other words, you better have a beast of a machine if you want some eye-candy on.

Lemme put it this way. I have an overclocked X2 4800+ with 2GB of RAM and an overclocked X1900XTX and running at 1920x1200 resolution and max graphical settings. Outside, I get on average, 15-30 FPS. Indoors, I get up to 80 FPS. Obviously it'll be better if I lower the quality on some things, but the game is so beautiful I can't.

The thing that's killing you is your integrated video card. Go shell out $150 or so for an ATI X800GTO (AGP version) card and you outta do alright at medium settings, even though I wish the CPU was better.

Recommended:

* 3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
* 1 GB System RAM
* ATI X800 series, Nvidia GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card

Minimum System Requirements:

* Windows XP
* 512MB System RAM
* 2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
* 128MB Direct3D compatible video card and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
* 8x DVD-ROM drive
* 4.6 GB free hard disk space
* DirectX 9.0c (included)
* DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
* Keyboard, Mouse

Supported Video Card Chipsets:

* ATI X1800 series
* ATI X1300 series
* ATI X850 series
* ATI x800 series
* ATI x700 series
* ATI x600 series
* ATI Radeon 9800 series
* ATI Radeon 9700 series
* ATI Radeon 9600 series
* ATI Radeon 9500 series
* ATI Radeon 9000 series
* NVIDIA Geforce 7800 series
* NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series
* NVIDIA GeForce FX series

As I mentioned, the reccommended specs is more like the minimum specs. You won't have any fun whatsoever playing with a minimum spec machine. You'd be better off buying the X-Box 360 version of Oblivion.

Is there a PS2 version, or just X-Box? I was hesitant to get it for the computer because I didn't think my computer would be up for it. That's what I hate about computer games. You have to buy a new computer every year or two just to keep up with them.

No, there's only an X-Box 360 version.

As for computer games, you don't have to upgrade every 2 years, that's only if you want to play the latest games at full detail, which is usually just the first-person type games as those are the most demanding. You can usually play other style games fine, it's just that first-person games are so popular and are becoming integrated into more style games these days, such as this, Oblivion, being an RPG.

You would have been fine with a 2 year old machine, it's just that your integrated video card is what's killing ya. An ATI 9800 series card is 2 years old and they're able to still run Oblivion, just not at the best detail, so if you would have had one of them 2 years ago, you'd be able to run it, but you're lacking an independant video card.

So either $150ish for an ATI 800GTO or $400 for an X-Box 360 (or however much they are these days). I wouldn't recommend anything less than the 800GTO for this game.

So, an integrated video card is not the end of the line for me? I was thinking it was. Ah, shows how much I know about this shit. You said I could plug the new one into an AGP slot. That will override the integrated one?

i have the game on 360 and i have to say that the screen does sometimes freeze for a second and it loads in the middle of when your in the game. for instance if you are walking through the forest it may load. the main loading screen takes a long time to load but apart from that this is one of the best games i have ever played on

You should be able to disable your integrated video card in your BIOS.

the main menu load quite fast on my rapidly aging 2.4Ghz P4 but ingame and the initial character creation windows almost all textures are white except for a few spirits here and there. I guess my once topline GF4600TI Ultra Deluxe is not so top line anymore.

I'd give the game 18/20.

It's good. Very good indeed.
The graphics on my A64 3200+, 1.5Gb Ram, X800 PC are sublime and smooth.

The gameplay is basically identical to Morrowind (why change what isn't broken) but the AI has been upped a few notches.

But it isn't perfect, by any means....

1. You can survive weeks at a time without sleeping.
2. You never have to eat!!

(Both of these can be fixed by a MOD that requires both to survive, which adds more realism).

4. I can't count - and this should be 3.
4. This is the real 4.
5. The AI still isn't all that good. The fights are better as it is more skillful (blocking, various attack types etc), but the AI sometimes throws up bizarre situations - such as people running against walls - or creeping past people that stand around like statues, even when your torch flickers on and off!
6. Everything seems to level up with you! Such that at the start it is p1ss easy - and later on it is very difficult! It would have been nice to have some areas that have fixed-level enemies such that at the start that place would be a definite no-go area, which would give you a sense of achievement when you finally went in and kicked proverbial butt!
7. The better the game is, the more little flaws become pronounced - and this game suffers from it. It is a superb game - but like a diamond with the smallest of cracks.

I borrowed a friend's copy to see whether it would run on my computer.

Suffice to say: it auto detected my settings to 640x480 at lowest quality. While I indignantly dragged a few sliders up a notch or two, I could practically hear my once-trusty GF5900 groan in protest. My A64 3000+ maintained a gloomy silence, and the 1Gb RAM went to sulk in the corner. After struggling to create a suitably glowering Dark Elf with a pathetically lagging mouse cursor, I found myself in a cold, dark and danky prison cell, waiting for my life to end. As if to rub it in, when I hit 'escape' the main menu appeared briskly, as if I was playing King's Quest I, and my mouse swooped gracefully in full 800dpi to the 'Quit to Desktop' button. It ended before it even began.

I guess I'll have plenty of time to finish Morrowind while I save up for something that will run Oblivion in all its anti-aliased glory. I just won't be happy until I can have 'HDR', 'Canopy shadows' and 'Treeline fade' at full throttle.

This just in:
Terrible performance on GeForce FX cards

This is caused by the poor implementation of Shader Model 2.0 in NVidia's GeForce FX line of cards. The only way to fix this really would be to force the game to run in PS 1.X mode, which I'm not really sure how to do just yet. ...
Apparently there is some help at Oldblivion.com, but I still want to be able to look myself in the mirror in the mornings.
