I'm just curious if I'm the only hip-hop listener here on this forum.

If you do indeed listen to it, who are some of your favorite artists, present or past?

If you do not listen to hip-hop, why not? I personally think it is the greatest music ever created....and no, not all hip hop is just negative stuff, it's just the kind of hip-hop that sells the most.

Anyway, discuss please.

I listen to
Nas
Bone
Bizzy(now that he's no longer with Bone)
A-Z
Cassidy
Nappy Roots
Chamillionaire(not the chopped and screwed shit)
Drag On
Jin
Lil Easy E
Easy E
Raekwon
Biggie
Pac
Pun
Big L
Loon
Gangsta Boo
Hussein Fatal
DMX
Eric B. & Rakim(Who's making a new album this year)
and anyone who's similar to those people. I also listen to Jay Z or Eminem sometimes, but I don't like most of their stuff. I consider myself, for the most part a rap purist, though I'm not. I just call myself that because I don't like the same music most people like.

Wow,that's a great list. I listen to Hip-Hop on a daily basis, so it's hard to name ALL the artists I listen to, but here are just some of my favorites (in no particular order).

2pac, 50 cent, jay-z, eminem, big pun, lil boosie, wu-tang, bone thugs, nas, ice cube, d-12, immortal technique, g-unit (most of the members, mostly lloyd banks and young buck), big l, biggie smalls, and lil kim.

I watch the "white rapper show" on vh1, so i suppose I can say them too, lol. Not that they're that good though.

oh how could i forget NWA, my favorite rap group right now. I listen to them all the time before I go to work and school.

No, not really I mostly listen to everything between rock and metal, although there some exeptions. I like some rapcore or numetal songs.

I sometimes listen to rap radio stations. Once in a while. I want to keep some Tupac songs in my playlist.

Rap and hip-hop are not the same thing. Rap is entirely spoken. Hip-hop is a fusion of rapping and singing on the same song. Hip-hop in short is more melodic.

Rap also tends to be more message-oriented, even if the message is only, "stick it to the man," "get as much sex as possible," or "let's exploit everyone who isn't of the same gender (or race or other demographic) as us." Hip-hop is often crafted a little more for entertainment value.

Then there's dubbing, that Caribbean style also popular in Latin America, where they rap but strive for a semblance of melody. The syllables are timed more accurately to the beats and they are intoned to a very short range of notes rather than as speech. Matisyahu veers toward that style.

I hate it. I lived in an all black area of the city for a few years and unlike a 'wigger' you see first hand the life this sub culture celebrates. The grinding poverty all around and the rap thumping from $50k SUV's filled with filthy mouthed kids shooting eachother, robbing their own people, rappin about beating their women, killing gays and celebrating drug addiction and incarceration.
Suburban white boys glamorize this life and pose as 'gangstas' thinking it's cool. I wish I could have driven a few 'wiggers' down to my 'hood and dumped them out inside the sub culture they so admire, where they could finally see if it really is all that great.

I LOVE 70's funk though.
(Parliament, Bootsy's Rubber Band, etc.)

Sure. I really have nothing against drugs anyway. It's the celebration of violence and poverty and filthy hate lyrics that turns me off. Seeing some white kid in his mom's Lexus blasting 5oCent in upscale suburbia makes me want to show the little prick just what is being celebrated in ghetto-fabulous music.

I hate hip-hop. Just can't stand it. The closest thing I listen to is rap-metal like Linkin Park, and even then, I prefer other types of metal over that.

I don't listen to rap, I only listen to music...

But anyway, what was the first rap song ever?

very occasionally, usually if ive got nothing else to listen to, and when it is its hip-hop not rap, as fraggle said they are not the same, at least hip-hop is music
