Varda, I do not mind admitting that I am a computer dunce, though surprisingly I do well with the small amount of knowledge that I have picked up along the way.

In the same way that you find long-winded posts tedious, my eyes glaze over when I start reading technical manuals.

You should start a 'tip of the week' thread with the amount of ability you obviously have from responses I have read when you have been in discussion regarding software, computer protection etc.

Thank you for the post, from one of the former 90%. :D

I knew it. How could anyone professing to be human not know it? I think the people above should be aggressively investigated until they cry.

Each of us has our own specialties in knowledge, GeoffP and I observe that a lot of people even raised with the technology are as dumb as dirt in it's use.

For you, a skill testing question from MY specialty.

What is the function of the ergot on the horse?

You can even google it, as you will find it's location on their anatomy, but I rather doubt you will find it's function.

Get back to me with your best guess or research, if you please. :D

I don't mind reading long text. What I don't like is skimming content from a pile of bullshit.
Most of what is said here can be said with a sentence or two.

Ctrl+F: My first rule of computers is: If you think there should be an easier way to do something, there probably is. Then, once you've Alt+F'd, you can use the arrows in the lower right corner of the screen, so everyone also knew about those, right?

Yet, for the life of me, I've never known how to do Mail Merge.

They should make GeoffPs with a big red OFF button.

Seconded on that.

There ain't none! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergot_(horse_anatomy) :p

Now answer my random question: have you ever been, or are you now, a member of the Reformed Myuunitarian faith? Be advised that any answer will incriminate you.

The old cowboys will tell you that the ergot is a scent gland. If you trim a piece off, it has a strong and not unpleasant musky odor. Horses have a keen scent of smell and when you put one into a location where another horse has been, they will travel along with their muzzle close to the ground, sniffing out the former occupant's vital statistics.

I am a pagan. At least that's what I tell the religious door-to-door types and it seems to keep them from coming back. :D

I've never heard that one before, although my association with the equine industry approaches zero. My suspicion was that it was a simple atavism; do horses in fact sweat more there? I can't imagine it would be a collector for scents, since I can't recall horse behaviours that would encourage collection of scent there.

I suppose the above is off-topic. Perhaps I can expect another warning soon. Ah, me.
