Converting pdf documents to Word

I have a document that was created and saved as a pdf file, and I need to convert it to Word. I don't want to buy any ''add on's'' - I received a few pop-up ads for those. I googled this, and everything is requiring payment of some type. I tried changing the extension from pdf to .doc, and it didn't convert. Is there a way to convert pdf files to Word documents, for free?

It worked, thank you so much! I didn't see that when I was searching, I landed on a page asking for money to purchase an add-on, which I was prepared to do, but wondered if there was a simpler/free option. The text shifted a bit, and I had to edit to realign, but other than that, it worked.
