Carrots sprouting roots in the fridge

Hmm I looked it up and it appears not to be true.

The eyes and even sprouting potatoes are safe to use but they may not keep
well. Also, they may blacken when cooked. Always remove the sprouts before
using the potato. However, green potatoes or any green part of a potato
should never be eaten -- the green material contains the alkaloid,
"solarin" which is poisonous. Green areas should be cut off and discarded
before the potato is used.

I was told that the potato was green because it had grown up above the soil and the green was because of chlorophyll.
Is that wrong as well?

where do carrot seeds come from?

From the plant probably.

Not exactly. When the potato is exposed to light, chlorophyll becomes synthesized. It's a reaction to the light the potato is exposed to after it has been harvested below ground. The issue of course is that the poisonous compound in the potato also becomes synthesized with light. Hence why you should not eat a potato that has turned green. The same poisonous compound (glycoalkaloids) is found in the plant and sprouts. That is why you should never ever consume any part of the actual potato plant and why any or all of the sprouts that may come out of the potato should be discarded and not consumed.

It would certainly explain some things

I wonder if it can cause brain damage?
Do you ever stop?

orleander, the potatoe is part of the deadly nightshade family, so DONT EAT THE BERRIES!!!!!!!!

Also carrot seeds come from the green "plant" that grows off the top of the carrot. If you let that "go to seed" you can collect the seeds but you do lose the carrot.

Hi there.

A couple of weeks back, I bought a 2 pound package of fresh carrots and put it in the fridge. I'm not a terrible fan of vegetables, so I'm not eating them very avidly. (The package in the fridge is half open, so air is inside.)

It turns out that in the meantime, the carrots started sprouting roots! Some of the smaller carrots dried up; some started to rot; and the majority is sprouting roots.

Is there anything wrong with those carrots that started sprouting?
I tried some of the sprouting carrots. I peeled off the skin and the roots. Those carrots only seem to taste more bland, but otherwise, seem fine.

I've heard that potatoes, once they start sprouting, aren't edible anymore because their chemical composition changes (even though they still look fine otherwise).

Uh, aren't carrots roots to begin with??? Just like an onion or potato?

potatos have berries?! When picking potato bugs I don't remember any berries. Do only certain kinds of potatos have berries?

If carrots are left to go to seed, I assume there is a flower. Do you have a pic of that flower?

Unable to stop myself here, I was once quite an attractive Sebago but I went to seed.

p.s please don't encourage me; I will be tempted to dig up some really bad puns.
