swede

you have good ideas. be assertive and take charge! everything is up for grabs a the moment. there is no govt as of yet. you can form it! if you displease the populace, we can always have you for dinner (or dessert if you are cute and sexy)

I can not resist another "improvement"

Beer making...

To make beer, you must grow hops. Then barley. You must have a good water source.

Hops flavor the beer, the barley gives it the body. (If I remember this right)

Making wines are simple, fruit, sugar, water, yeast to ferment it. The yeast in not strickly necessary other than it speeds the process.

Making of distilled spirits is not much harder but requires a still. Moonshiners have been making stills for ages. One of the hardest things to make would be the tubes necessary to carry the distillation process outside the still and into the collector container. This could be made from hand blown glass. Glass requires silica, limestone, a mold or a blow tube, and a few other items.

Bread is made from ground wheat to make flour, yeast, salt, and water.

Finding salt has always been a problem. The easiest way to obtain salt is the same way it was gotten during the civil war days. Make a large shallow ditch near the ocean. Let the ocean water flow into it at high tide. Not a large amount. During the day, the sun will evaporate the water, leaving behind salt. The salt is also good for preserving meat, by packing the meat within the salt. While saltly, it will not go bad.

does anybody know how to make a battery?
what about paper? i dried and flattened some leaves but it crumbled to shit
where are the frikking papyrus fields!
i am using charcoal to inscribe shit on rocks for chrissakes!
anyone got a pencil?

i spotted some females while tending my marijuana plot. anyone up for a raid?
the gender imbalance in sciforia sucks

The simplest battery is one made from a stack of copper, wet paper, and silver or nickel. The material is alternated with paper inbetween each.

A laden jar, (early battery), was a foil lined glass jar.

By taking magnets and putting them near a wound amarture that spins, is a way of making AC electricity. The source of power to turn it would be the water wheel.

Making of paper is a bit more daunting. You need cellouse. This can be obtained by pulping wood. It is then steamed. A fine wire screen is used to collect the pulp and it is spread on it in an even layer to dry. The rough paper will not be what you are used to. Bleach must be used to make it white. The length of the fibers of cellouse will determine the quality of paper. Hardwoods make good writing paper, soft woods make good packing material and paper bags.

Before the event of modern day plumbing, the way to get fresh water was either to dig a well or make a huge cistern out of wood. Water would be collected off the roof during a rain and led to the cistern by use of drains and pipe. A simple method to make this drain collector would be to split bamboo and use a hot piece of steel to burn the sections out. You then have a half pipe that can be directed to the cistern.

The first writing utensil for paper was a feather cut at an angle. Ink was made from berry juice. It was called a quill pen.

ahh we have to figure out copper and silver

like nenar said, and since we are just establishing modes of production, i hereby
decree that hemp will be a substitute for trees whenever it is possible.
(care must be taken to avoid old destructive habits)

objections?

what about a time frame (?) for sciforia (?)?
1 day=1 month for them?

Originally, copper was found on the ground near where veins of copper came out of the ground at fault lines. Shortly after it was being mined there. There are evidences of cooper mines during early Greek days.

Silver was found and mined by the early American indians from caves. Have you looked at the back recesses of that cave we were living in? :D

Pottery may also be developed. This comes from clay, usually found near a stream or river that makes it easy to recover. A kiln may be made from the same material. Also bread ovens can be made this way. The pottery gives you portable water proof containers that may also be used for cooking. Unglazed pottery containers were hung in the shade to allow the water within to be cooled by the air and evaporation. This made for cool water without refridgeration.

The making of light bulbs will have to await the discovery of nicrome wire and the vaccumn pump. Candles can be made from tallow. This is the fat of animals.

Soap is made from tallow and lye. The lye comes from the ash of fires.

There is one thing I neglected to mention. A cold tent is a miserable tent in the winter. There is a way to supply a fire within a tent. Dig a hole inside the tent where you wish your fire. Dig a parrell hole outside the tent. Connect the two with a slanting uphill tunnel. This is your chimney. The one time I tried it, it worked well.

"Capitalism means that people that do the most work reap the least reward."

Really? Well I know that is not the definition, but you are suggesting that that is how things end up? Maybe in that case we should discover a yet unknown system that gives the most reward to the people that do the most work.

That undiscovered system is called capitalism. People pay money for things they need. The work is not the issue. Someone can work their ass off for creating something noone wants, therefore they don't get much for it. If people are efficient, they do something productive while not working themselves to death. You must be intelligent to be efficient. Capitalism ensures that what people want is what will be produced. Its survival of the fittest business.

It's not the definition, but the ultimate outcome.
It doesn't work.
A competitive society does not flourish.
Why is it that technology (along with every aspect of civilization) advances slower than snails?
It's to the point where change is negligible.

for the record, i fully approve of people eating me. but i think i would make a damn fine leader so we'll start with the slower people and children to eat. for my first motion as tribe ruler, i make wet1 my first hand man. a good leader always surrounds herself with more capable people.

Trapping of small game:

For fish, use small limbs stuck in the mud. The body of the trap should be a small circle with your bait. The throat of the trap should be formed to make a narrowing passage into the body. Once in the fish will circle the edges but will never be in quite the right position to exit it.

For small game, several methods are possible. One is to locate a small game trail. Put two small branches with Y's in them. A slip knot loop is made to hang between the Y's over the trail. Small game, such as rabbits, feel the loop around them they bolt ahead. This causes the loop to tighten about them. They will always try to escape which means they won't back up, causing the loop to loosen.

For birds, make a small elongated U type tunnel without a roof. Place a board over the tunnel. Make a flat top pyramid from thin sticks that has air gaps that can be seen out of. Place trap on outer edge of board. Bait with grain. A small stack inside trap and a trail through the tunnel and out and away from tunnel. Birds will follow grain trail into the trap. Once in they will walk the inside edge of the trap, walking over the board instead of into the tunnel.

There are many other traps that I could tell you of, including the spring tree, deadfall, treadal, drop trap, live trap, ect. Some are dangerous to people themselves and I will not cover those.

hmm..my first thought: reproduction. must carry on the species you know.
Surely yes!! Survival must be primary here, not quality of life.

If the only plantation we have is a blade of grass then we need to seek out the cannabis plant and bring it back and we also need vegetables plants too. :) There is no such thing as a gravy plant is there?? I'd like gravy with my vegetables until an animal which we can kill and eat turns up so I'll find out how to do that. :)

i want a more solid house. i will grab some clay from the river and fire it. if it turns into brick, i am gonna build a nice pad.

swede, dinner my place? got some killer mead! rabbit stew main course!

well, if we're planting chickens and bread, we can surely plant gravy.
Whoever said they were planting chickens and bread will have to change their post because it's just not possible. Me, I'm going to grow my own vegetables so I can at least live. Then I'll gather as much understanding as I can while spreading humanity (actually spreading humanity!) so that other beings can enjoy this wonderful world. (This may sound like I've been taking some funny tablets but I assure you, I haven't!)

it's no less fictitious than a bunch of people used to civilization getting together in a lack of it and not killing each other within the first day

me...i'm planting ice cream plants
actually, we could just plant soybeans cause they can be made into virtually anything, including "chicken", "gravy" and "ice cream".

Nobody has to eat anybody.

What do we need to construct a cabin that could house us all?

Positions:
Food Growers/Gatherers - Handles the creation/collection of food.

Transport - Transports the food to the prep area.

Preperation - Prepares food for everybody to eat.

Servers - In charge of the distribution of prepared food.

Materials - In charge of gathering resources and raw materials for construction

Crafts - In charge of crafting raw materials into usable construction supplys.

Builders - In charge of using the supplies to construct the cabin.

Tailors - In charge of the creation of usable shoes/apparel/towels/sleeping materials.

Doctors - In charge of making sure everybody is operating at peak physical levels.

Every morning, the entire population participates in stretching/breathing/movement activities.
Afterwards, it's off to work.
After work, everybody eats their daily meal.
After meal,
it's planning time for some
while others keep records of daily activities
and others continue to finish misclleanious projects such as tool making and hand crafting necessary materials.
The rest participate in meditation and peaceful activities.

children! this hankering for your fave foods has to stop. prepare yourself for a tofu diet and and a daily tai chi routine!

:D

Shiney objects. No civilization is complete without an abundant supply of shiney things. Be they made of gold or chrome, it doesn't matter they just need to be shiney.

Why shiney objects? Well aside from the astetic(sp?) appeal, they keep the stupider members of the society occupied entranced by the bright sparkliness. Which keeps them out from underfoot and out of the way.

Need i say more?
