Can artificial intelligences suffer from mental illness?

If an AI machine had self check systems for damage or viruses then I wonder if input from these systems to the AI when there was a problem could interfere with the AI machine somehow and result in something like annoyance for the AI machine?

I would rather put it this way.
An AI might experience an "annoyance" trying to execute an infected command code resulting in an unintended result, which the computer itself knows is no longer compatible with other running programs. The most likely result would be a "crash" and the AI goes into sleep mode, and/or activate it's anti-virus diagnostic system to find the virus and clean it, then "wakes up" and merrily goes on its way to say, deliver the mail house to house.

That makes more sense. I suppose the AI would have to go into a sleep mode state, as you put it, to fix some types of viruses and other types of processes or problems, such as system and virus definition updates, because it may not be able to process information or function correctly while an anti-virus program is fixing the AI's code or other types of problems.

Mental illness can be very confusing for some people, and I imagine future AIs too. One of the hardest parts for people suffering from mental illness is identifying and accepting they have one.

Absolutely. Some people can get by with whatever problems they may have in their lives but some people have trouble managing their problems and need help.

We are able to cheat "natural selection", but then a secondary principle comes into play, the "exponential function" in a limited space (habitat) and individual natural selection (the individual perishes) changes to mass selection (large numbers of individuals perish at once).
It is a mathematical certainty.

bill & melinda gates have put forward some intertesting data around the reduction of birth rates by the reduction of infant and maternal death rates.
it would be interesting to see the math applied to that(i think they already have but have simplified it to allow low intellect spacial mental picturing).
the return on investment increases exponentialy the longer the child lives for.
the investment in reducing over all birth/dependants is obviousely factored in as a basic need for resources.

It shows that we better get on with development of "renewable" resources without "unintended" consequences.

IMHO, the Sun is still the best potential resource of energy. It is off-world and releases a predictable amount of energy for millions of years to come. All we need to do is find an efficient way of capturing this energy, without interfering with the earth's own need for solar energy.

In relation to the OP, I wonder if an AI would require less energy than a human and if we could develop a skin which allows an AI to capture sufficient energy for it to become self-sufficient and not be dependent on additional energy manufactured by humans.

the motor systems that drive walking or wheels or fitting welding and other robotic arms and conveyer belts & large mixers currently require comparative VAST amounts of energy though if a building had the entire roof covered in solar panels with some wind, which with excess power used it to crack water into hydrogen to power hydrogen combustion turbines...

who will buy the products when there is no one left employed making money ?

A true IA built for serving mankind, will make all this unneccesary. They would work for free withour sorrow or pain.
It would set human society free from the constant pursuit of wealth and social survival resources and would allow for more independence of others..

I am talking about a synthetic human being which operates with great efficiency. Humans only need a few relatively light meals to produce enough energy for it's daily activities. Using the same principles of chemical energy plus solar energy would, IMO , not be a great obstacle.

The trick lies in the fractality of the sensory and sentient (motor) neural sytem. How does the human brain function and we are beginning to understand the function of the trillions of nano-tubulars, each which is already a natural computer.

The entire body of living things is in reality a hive-mind, which is able to make "best guesses" of reality, wheras an AI can be made to do this also, but by advanced artificial sensory instruments (which by definition are also computers).

To my mind the blob of water with a mix of common elements we have as a body is only MORE than its parts because of it has an ability to co-ordinate the blob / mix (ITS ALIVE) and do extraordinary things. It's the PROCESS of life which is the MORE

A lab with the chemicals in storage can easily re-create the composition of the body but not the life process

If a person happened to die and fall down next to the pile (or perhaps soup) of chemicals they would in essence be the same (although one might have a lab coat as part of the mix)

Not necessarily, but neither do humans. Hawking was clear witness to that.

We can build stronger and lighter skeletons which are less subsceptible to oxidation than bone skeletons
