Art is created within the right side of the brain, which is also the side to the brain, religion is processed. This side of the brain uses integral or 3-D data organization, which is hard to put into words, since word processing is done in the left brain. There is a gap between left brain words and possible right brain abstractions. Religious art helps to express spatial ideas and relationships that can escape the limits of language.
Art often moves you or generates an emotional response, which is processed in the right brain. The feeling is connected to the extra dimension within 3-D data processing, which is not common to 2-D cause and effect of the left brain processing because of the limits of language. If you look at an art master piece it can stimulate the imagination causing right brain to become conscious. With the right brain conscious and active, religion makes use of this connection to help express the 3-D or holistic nature of religion.
