Hmmm...does it just automatically restart? I had a similar sounding problem recently that I fixed by running Windows Memory Diagnostic (http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp#top). I had errors up the arse, failing drivers, etc etc. Found that a stick of RAM was just really dusty, pulled it out & blew out all the dust now everything works like a charm.

Just another suggestion for you.

...but there is a definate relation to how long it is left turned off, and how long it will run once turned back on. If it is off for a few days, you might get a couple hours out of it. A few hours, youll have a few minutes. Once it freezes, its down for good. I dont understand how this can make a differance, but ive been working with it for a couple weeks, and theres definately a pattern.
This indicates to me it may not be a software problem at all. Software doesn't rely on how long the thing has been on or off, it either works or it doesn't. It could be both, of course - does it boot up in safe mode or not?

Have you looked at your power supply recently? is it noisy, is the fan working correctly, is it full of shit? Seems to me there are plenty of cheaper alternatives to going out and buying a whole new OS disk when the problem might be a $10 power supply.

"does it boot up in safe mode or not?"
depends on how many times it freezes during scandisk and loading of windows.

The power supply is something i dont know much about. I know where it is, but i dont know how to get to it. the inside of my pc was suprisingly clean everywhere else, so i wouldn't think that it would be too bad in the little box, but like i said, im not sure how to get in there.

"Hmmm...does it just automatically restart? "

nope. i had that virus though, verrrrrry frustrating. that was the first time i reformatted a computer.

yeah there was a virus that did that. mine was doing something different though, it would suddenly freeze up, the display would have all these lines on it and my speakers would buzz. but all i did was remove my RAM, blow it out and it worked fine. i felt stupid but it worked ;).

You can try a bare-bones clean install of the os.Simply add one componant at a time after re-install -such as cd-rom/extra memory/agp video card/modem ect...- until evrything checks out clean and windows is happy. Be sure to format your harddrive using overwrites before re-install.

µSigh,...have a break...

Then take a deep breath,....huuuuuuuHHHG!

Snatch the PC and in one move,...trow it trough the window (open or closed depending on needs)

I've always wondered why there where no more accounts in the news, these things do happen no? ;)

so NightFall have you got it back up and running or still in limbo?

well, everyithig looks good as fa as hardware goes.

i got a cd to reinstall windows but when it boots up its blank.. which means its gonna come down to hours on the phone with acer -sigh-

assuming you have a Windows 2K/XP cd and not some crappy rescue disk, it could be that your bios is not set to boot from CD.

Kunax is right, you'll have to go into your BIOS settings and change your BOOT up option from A: / C: to CDROM / C: (or just plain CDROM), it should then allow the disk to run at bootup.

Otherwise as I suggested before get a windows 98 bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com, that should allow you to then be able to install your OS.
