Do you guys think that politics has ANY place in the Olympic games????

Did any of the Non Australian people here pick up on that aspect of the opening cermony??? if so what was it???

I just want to know if you guys thought it was as lame as I do. BTW I don't mean the opening cermony as a whole, in fact I thought it was very well done...I just didn't appreciate the politics, and the fact that all the political gestures etc weren't genuine.

Rambler,

No I don't think they have any place in the games. It's supposed to be a place ware the nations put aside all of that crap and have a good game. Allthough I didn't see the ceramony myself, so I can't coment on it's quality.

As in science and religion, politics needs to keep it's dirty little nose OUT of the Olympics. I was against the boycotts some years back, both the US and the USSR. It should be about the athletes. I don't watch the televised event because of the rampant commercialism, but I try to catch the results in the paper.

I don't remember exactly when it was, the closed fist salute by the Black American
athletes in Mexico City or the murders of the Jewish athletes in Munich. There was a movement to not announce the nationality of the athletes. Their home town would be given when they were awarded a medal.
Their national colors or the flag of their home country would not be shown on their clothing. As I remember it, only the athletes were agreeable.

I remember Jimmy Carter telling how he is going to boycott the Olympics. "We'll show them Russians, we won't send our athletes to Moscow." Who did he hurt? Just a bunch of kids that had worked every day for years to realize their dreams of participating in the Olympics. Many never got another chance.

SMILE IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY.
