По разным причинам. Одна из них - распущенность. Иметь право делать всякую дурь - это одно. Убеждать других, что это нормально - это другое. Люди со слабой психикой, дети, подростки, "ломаются". Они не могут понять "что такое хорошо, и что такое плохо".

Понимать причины и следствия своих поступков, и нести за них ответственность. Вот пример: мне было лет 5, когда я подошла к отцу и спросила у него, что он делает? Он в это время курил сигарету. И на мой вопрос он дал мне полноценный ответ, как взрослому человеку. Рассказал, как формируется зависимость, как это вредно, как трудно бросить курить. И в конце предложил мне попробовать самой покурить, со словами: "не бойся, затягивайся посильнее". Ну я и "затянулась". Запомнила на всю жизнь. Никогда больше мне не хотелось покурить. Хотя никто никогда и не запрещал. Просто с детства объяснили, что "всё мне можно, но не всё полезно".

Why do all totalitarian regimes destroy religions first?

They don't but those with legitimacy based on strong ideology, eg Communism or 'Great Leader' cults, compete with religion for the hearts and minds of the populace. They are rivals.

Where deep corruption is the rule (it often is) loyalty to the regime and sufficient 'tribute' (eg 'election donations') is preferred over competence. Dishonesty - the regime having compromising information about someone in order to influence them - can be preferred to honesty. Brave people who are honest and sincere and have a strong alternate 'ideology' (eg religion) are seen as potential enemies of The Regime.

I was lucky to be born in a good family. I was never forbidden anything, but from early childhood I was taught to think for myself. To understand the causes and consequences of my actions, and to take responsibility for them. Here's an example: I was about 5 years old when I went up to my father and asked him what he was doing. He was smoking a cigarette at the time. And he gave me a full answer to my question, as an adult. He told me how addiction is formed, how harmful it is, how difficult it is to quit smoking. And in the end, he suggested that I try smoking myself, saying: "Don't be afraid, take a deep drag." Well, I "dragged in." I remembered it for the rest of my life. I never wanted to smoke again. Although no one ever forbade me. They simply explained to me from childhood that "I can do everything, but not everything is good for me."
