Yeah, it's a nightmare. Eternal punishment for temporal crimes. So obviously just a method to enforce social order in a time before practical law enforcement.

But Bill Murray's introspection did eventually free him from the cycle. Same with reincarnation. The karma/rebirth cycle offers hope. The Christian eternity does not.
