Being an insufferable bitch i.e. moderator rudeness.

I take it that 'sociopath' is meant to be insulting?
Not effective, of course, but what can one expect from a snowflake.

This is not the first time that this particular insult has been bandied about by this particular snowflake.
I'd expect her to be punished if she weren't to be defended.
Just pointing out your own hypocrisy..
You were insulting Lori from the start, calling her snowflake etc. Now you want her punished for calling you a name?

Also, it seems you define the difference between a snowflake and a witty person by the effectiveness of their insults; i.e. witty persons are far more effective in their insults.
Furthermore, you seem to argue that a 'witty person' is preferable over a 'snowflake'.
Does this mean that you celebrate effective insults while thinking that ineffective insults should be punished?

Some people are just misanthropic and enjoy being rude and callous.

I really don't think the two (being a misanthrope and being rude and callous) are connected.
In my experience it's mostly the 'people-people' that are rude and callous, paradoxical as it may sound.

She's abrasive, profane, and generally insulting to those who act like idiots, don't use their brains, take leave of common sense, pretend to be better than someone else, make baseless assumptions and feign innocence.

She's abrasive to people she doesn't like, or if she thinks she can score points with it.

I think you'll find a thread about science around here somewhere.

No, sorry, I was wrong.

Any and all of the posters who've been here for more than a year or two would instantly recognise that the problem with sci is not a contemptuous sneer at a pathetic moron or two but the complete abundance of fucking gumbies whose abject blandness has rendered the place totally beige and so riddled with spamlike posts that any chance of decent discourse is lost in the incessant white noise.

Having said that, the visual of String's thing flapping noisily yet flaccidly against Gendy's flat pallid arse did almost raise a leering eyebrow.

/feels for pulse of sci.... -------------------^-------------..................

My overall impression of Gendy is positive. She has a sharp mind and she tells thing like it is. Unfortunately nobody enjoy being humiliated and nobody should. Humiliation in public will never work, sciforums is just like any other societies in real life. Some people who see things on the bright side, would take some time to reflect and take lesson from it. Some others would press panic button and run behind moderators' protection. I kinda see the ban would happen and she knew it, which is very unfortunate. She is an asset for this forum and I wish to enjoy more posts of her.

Lori did not report Gendy, a number of other people did.

I can't disagree with that..

Getting rid of those who are "different" means that the powers that be are slowly killing what drives a discussion forum - namely difference of values, difference of needs, interests, and concerns.

So.. it's ok to insult people now? Or just generally do whatever you want?
Or do you have to be 'different' to get a free pass?
Lori certainly is 'different'.. but yet that's what Gendy is criticizing.

I prefer the term Liberal. . . In the Jeffersonian sense (which is the real definition of the word). The fact that I have to say things like "Classical Liberal" is annoying. I would rather have my eyes ripped out than be labeled an ideological conservative. Name one good thing in the past two thousand years done by a great conservative? Go ahead. Try. I'll give you all the time you need. 'Cause if you think about it, pretty much every good intellectual, philosophical and social change/creation has come about by liberals, not conservatives.

Care to name my "conservative" beliefs.

Religion?
Abortion?
Immigration?
The Environment?
Taxes?
Gay rights?
Iraq?
Military deployment to five quintillion bases overseas?
Trade?

There isn't a conservative organization in the USA that would touch me with a ten foot pole. Maybe some in Europe would. But even that's a stretch.

Opposing universal health care and believing that the Afghanistan invasion was warranted isn't strictly a "conservative" worldview.

Conservatives prefer and idolize the past. I'm all about

~String
Compared to me (who is way waaayyyy left on the scale), you are a conservative.:) Hell, compared to me, the greater majority on this forum are conservatives.. That is what I meant by conservative.

So no need to get testy.. pun intended..;)

A nearly identical point can be (and is being) made in regards to Lori's ass picture.

When was that posted? I saw a picture of a skirt, that Lori may have been wearing, but was not recognisable. I saw nothing offensive in the picture I saw.

Meanwhile, Gendanken just spews insults.

If you are comparing the two you must be desperate for something to grind your axe on. I suggest you take a break, and get a dose of perspective.

Here we go again... *sigh*

For starters...
Enmos,
“On top of that, Gendy has built herself quite a reputation.”
A reputation which blinds people, by the way. Sometimes people can actually view the world, however, and not their preconception of it.
It is difficult.
Uncalled for, Invert. You only show up here anymore to interact with (read defend) gendy regardless of what you say. I don't think Enmos, a prolific poster and extremely fair moderator, whom can hardly be considered "blind", deserved that insult, veiled or not.

Wow, James, nice post :worship:
Absolutely outstanding. Best I've seen yet from a moderator on this topic, maybe there is hope... (Doubtful, but a valiant attempt :))

I can't disagree with that..

Neither can I.

However, this place is profit driven, much to the bewilderment and consternation of, say, Tiassa (Bless his heart). However, I think I may have finally figured out this scheme - took me a long time, and I am very familiar with most marketing scams. IMHO, There is a limited group of people that would attend a strictly academic, exclusively "science oriented" site. Furthermore, these people probably would tend to log in as soon as they arrived - hence no ads.

Next, contemplate a forum allowed to run wild - while very interesting to long term members... Ummm, noobies, general public... Not so much. Hence no lurkers, hence no advertisement revenue. This drives the sometimes "contradictory" orders from on high - moderate, but only so much - touch, but do not taste - taste but do not swallow - etc. Just keep that advertising revenue in mind.

So if we weed out the old members (almost inevitable with the current ban system - just a matter of time), it opens room for new people [edit:figuratively speaking] - and creates a pool of others that are here, but not logged in - lots of advertising exposure. I'm here every day, but only log in 1-2 times a week, for short periods. So I get to see all the lovely ads (actually I don't, but that's only because I have tricked out ad blocking software). I could go on, but I think you get the point...

I can't be the only one exhibiting this pattern, and the more ads viewed, the more click-throughs, the more profit. It's actually very simple, once you understand. And remember, this is what I do for a living - marketing consultant (and quite successful at it, although I gave up pursuit of a degree in engineering - you know, "science" stuff - to chase those dollars.) Anyway, if anyone else with expertise in this field, including moderators, admin., etc. can find fault with this theory (and its corollaries), I'd love to hear about it.

Having said all that, I have only been a member for a little over two years and a lurker for perhaps another year, but I too miss "the good old days". I have found though, in my fifty years on this earth, that this is a worldwide symptom of general human angst. It's just the way it is. In spite of everything, there are some really cool, really smart people here - a much higher proportion of such than encountered in real life - again IMHO.

So long for now, and thanks for all the fish...

Oh don't get me wrong... "people-people" can be just as rude and callous as anyone, but I think being rude and callous may indicate misanthropy.

However...

I think it is more often a sign of extremely low self esteem. Obviously it makes Gendanken feel good to put others down. What does that say about her character? She must feel pretty low herself to have to stoop to such levels. Intelligent or not, a person can still have low self worth. Everything about her posts screams low self esteem. It seems more to me that she is trying to prove how smart she is rather than applying her intelligence. Which is sad because its certainly a waste of good mental energy. She speaks of being vengeful. How productive is that? While she is busy wasting away in a dark corner plotting revenge, that person she is plotting against is probably not even thinking about her and enjoying their life. What good is it to hold on to grudges and resentments? It gets one nowhere. Obviously that person holds a tremendous amount of power over you if you allow yourself to become obsessed with defeating them in some way. She seems to have a desperate need to prove, either to herself or others, that she is better than them. If she spends so much time contemplating how to do that, then she indeed must have low self worth. Hating herself, but unable to confront this aspect of her psyche, she directs this hatred and vitriol outwards towards others who remind her of her ignorant side, considering that she seems to simultaneously think she is smarter than everyone else, she must hate nearly everyone, thus becoming misanthropic.

I think the only time I have ever watched that show was when it was on TV while I was in a waiting room somewhere. But if you will gauge taking a photo of your backside and posting it on an internet forum full of males by what Jerry would do, and then getting offended when others point out your stupidity and pettiness, then you pretty much fail.

If people treat you as they are, it is because you act like it.

You basically went around going 'oh oh oh.. look at me'..

really did i? in the post pictures of yourself thread? is that what i was doing? posting pictures of myself and my husband? oh oh oh...look at me!!!

are you out of your mind?

it would be nice if we could have a thread in this community where we could post pics of ourselves and put a face with an avatar. but unfortunately we risk insult from people who aren't contributing to the thread in any other way, and use it as a form of retribution against members they decide they don't like. as unbelievable as it is, there are people who would see the pics i posted initially and think, "oh look at her all 'oh oh oh...look at me'. i better knock her down a notch". you're one of those very few people. as opposed to most members who would think, "oh hey, that's lori. she looks surprisingly normal". it's a shame i had to hear about how old i looked, and have my hair referred to as straw, and how i resembled a dog, or andy dick. and it's a shame that christa had to have her makeup and weight criticized. and it's a shame that gendy decided to vomit some of the sickest, most hateful, vile shit i've ever read, in my marriage thread.

and given that...

and then posted a picture of your arse in the hope of getting attention and then cracking the shits when that attention ends up being negative. Honestly, what in the hell did you expect? Have you no self respect?

The point that Gendy made was that your posting that photo was not for her benefit, but for your own. But as they say, even negative attention is still attention. And in that, your actions were very obvious and yes, fail, no matter how much you try to say it was "funny". For fucks sake, grow up and act your age.

the gesture i made to gendy by posting a pic of my backside (fully clothed) was not only mild-mannered, it was entirely appropriate. it's not surprising that you and gendy are too superficial to get the message but it was "kiss my ass. if you want to bitch about my face, then here's something else to look at, bitch. bye."

I think you're right about most of the above, except for the misanthropy part :p
Oh well, perhaps you're right. Just remember that there are other kinds of misanthropes too ;)

Hey, I might be the most misanthropic prick on the planet! But I try to avoid directing my feelings outward towards others. I understand that it's my issue, and more than likely, a skewed perspective of reality.

The question is: does the forum function better or worse as a result of moderation? My own view, of course, is that it is better. Consider the alternative.

Like I said - people have very different reasons for coming here, different values. Which are not necessarily in line with the owners of this forum, or the moderators and administrators.

So any assessment of how well this forum works will be made on the basis of those values.
So such assessments will necessarily differ.

Sciforums is not a community. The things the all posters here have in common, are of a technical nature.

I think it is therefore pointless to try to figure out whether some poster really is an "insufferable bitch" or not or justify action toward them on such grounds.

I understand that this forum has an owner and according policies.
I think it would be more fitting then that if a poster does deserve infractions or warnings, that this be stated with "you have breached forum rules", without any further discussion.
It is when moderators or posters later on justify or question the sanctions they have given out that the problems inherent in something like an "online community" really show.

Personally, I would prefer that moderators would stick only to moderating commercial spambots, sock puppets and such technical issues.

In daily life, we are all more or less faced with people we don't like for some reason. Ideally, I think it should be up to us to come up with a mature response to them (whether that response is put into words or not).
Online forums like this can be an excellent practice ground for that.

Taking away people who are challenging, rude or in any other way unpalatable means that we don't get the opportunity to practice a mature response to them. IRL, there are few such opportunities, and the consequences in them tend to be serious.

"Different" from whom? What do you imagine is the "ideal" member we have in mind? (Just interested)

The moderators, of course.

Lori, you do realized that this is an international forum with users from multicultural backgrounds?? Putting aside cultural or religious background, the users in sciforums who come from the same society alone are very plural, from very liberal to very conservative, from normal to crazy =P. Anybody who put some thought provoking pictures or made some thought provoking gestures must prepare themselves against any unwanted reaction. What kind of reaction did you expect when you posted this (the picture is shown as link):

do you have anything else? still looking for that nugget of information i guess. call me crazy.

i have something for you. here's something for your monitor...

 If you do not wish to get the negative comments, you should have think before posting that, otherwise you should have prepared yourself against any unwanted reactions..
