Here we go again... *sigh*
For starters...
Enmos,
“On top of that, Gendy has built herself quite a reputation.”
A reputation which blinds people, by the way. Sometimes people can actually view the world, however, and not their preconception of it.
It is difficult.
Uncalled for, Invert. You only show up here anymore to interact with (read defend) gendy regardless of what you say. I don't think Enmos, a prolific poster and extremely fair moderator, whom can hardly be considered "blind", deserved that insult, veiled or not.
Wow, James, nice post :worship:
Absolutely outstanding. Best I've seen yet from a moderator on this topic, maybe there
is hope... (Doubtful, but a valiant attempt

No, sorry, I was wrong.
Any and all of the posters who've been here for more than a year or two would instantly recognise that the problem with sci is not a contemptuous sneer at a pathetic moron or two but the complete abundance of fucking gumbies whose abject blandness has rendered the place totally beige and so riddled with spamlike posts that any chance of decent discourse is lost in the incessant white noise.

I can't disagree with that..
Neither can I.
However, this place is profit driven, much to the bewilderment and consternation of, say, Tiassa (Bless his heart). However, I think I may have finally figured out this scheme - took me a long time, and I am
very familiar with most marketing scams. IMHO, There is a limited group of people that would attend a strictly academic, exclusively "science oriented" site. Furthermore, these people probably would tend to log in as soon as they arrived - hence
no ads.
Next, contemplate a forum allowed to run wild - while very interesting to long term members... Ummm, noobies, general public... Not so much. Hence no lurkers, hence
no advertisement revenue. This drives the sometimes "contradictory" orders from on high - moderate, but only so much - touch, but do not taste - taste but do not swallow - etc. Just keep that advertising revenue in mind.
So if we weed out the old members (almost inevitable with the current ban system - just a matter of time), it opens room for new people
[edit:figuratively speaking] - and creates a pool of others that are here, but not logged in - lots of advertising exposure. I'm here every day, but only log in 1-2 times a week, for short periods. So I get to see all the lovely ads (actually I don't, but that's only because I have tricked out ad blocking software). I could go on, but I think you get the point...
I can't be the only one exhibiting this pattern, and the more ads viewed, the more click-throughs,
the more profit. It's actually very simple, once you understand. And remember, this is what I do for a living - marketing consultant (and quite successful at it, although I gave up pursuit of a degree in engineering - you know, "science" stuff - to chase those dollars.) Anyway, if anyone else with expertise in this field, including moderators, admin., etc. can find fault with this theory (and its corollaries), I'd love to hear about it.
Having said all that, I have only been a member for a little over two years and a lurker for perhaps another year, but I too miss "the good old days". I have found though, in my fifty years on this earth, that this is a worldwide symptom of general human angst. It's just the way it is. In spite of everything, there are some
really cool,
really smart people here - a much higher proportion of such than encountered in real life - again IMHO.
So long for now, and thanks for all the fish...
