This is the news from CNN:

I can not be so sure, but my guess is that even the crusades couldn't plan such a weird action a thousand years ago. As a non-believer, it doesn't bother me in any religious level; but I can see it will cause unnecessary tension.

This is so outrageous I don't even know where to begin. I mean, in Islam, we recognize their holy books. The tawrat (torah), zabur (pslams), injil (the gospels), why can't Christians atleast respect al-Qur'an? I don't really know what this church's aim is other than to get negative reactions and comments from the Muslim community and assert Christianity > Islam. I mean, the Nazis burned books they didn't agree with also. I mean seriously, this is completely outrageous and you wonder why Muslims get angry at the West. First, there is this "draw Muhammad [saw] day," and now this. I mean, if you guys think Musilms are so evil, crazy and bloodthirsty, why provoke us?

Now THAT is stupid. I wonder how these idiots would feel if a mosque did a "international burn a bible day"... just pathetic.

    Wang

This is even more stupid than burning Harry Potter books. To the other, these Christians might be counting on a backlash, the whole evil, violent Muslim idea. And in recent years that has been a fairly safe bet as far as the American outlook is concerned. Americans just aren't into cause and effect unless it justifies them.

Still, though, it's Florida. Apparently someone thinks "America's Wang" just hasn't disgraced itself enough, lately. After all, the 2000 election was nearly ten years ago.

There can be only one rational response to this:

It's not the west, it's just one church in the west. Please don't generalize.

You need to look at what this supposed Church is into though. Aside from Quran burning day, they also have an ongoing campaign against the current mayor:

They should sign up with the retards who protest outside the funerals of dead soldiers and anyone they know who dies and who was homosexual.

And to think that these fools may be breeding more fools..:bawl:

Here's a great idea: Let's all care what this church does! This way they get press and all the power they want.

Or, let's all ignore them. They aren't hurting anybody and if we IGNORE them--and not pay a bit of attention to them--whatever they hope to get by this is totally negated.

Let me make a prediction here. When this church burns a book, consisting of wood-pulp pages, some thread, ink and a leather binding, a bunch of OTHER people will go nuts and pour into the streets like their mother was just killed or something.

Best advice is to ignore the idiots.

How is this in any way a slap on an entire state--with nearly 20 million people--when it's just one weird fringe group? AFAIK, every state has religious nuttery.

    Exactly.

Call me when they start blowing things up. Then I'll worry.

because people are the same. it doesn't matter what religion they practice. there are muslims who think westerners are evil and antagonize, and there are christians who think muslims are evil and antagonize. and there are muslims and christians who don't hate and antagonize.

I think you meant "[extreme] religious people are similar" to be more precise; in terms of their demonization practises. Because it's just simple...

yeah, i mean, i don't know how much damage you can do with hinduism, but if you want to hate somebody, there are plenty of religions to choose from to rationalize, or you can be an atheist and hate religious people.

Because it's a primitive collection of superstitious horseshit, jafar, as all such religious texts are. If you truly believe in such horseshit, then you do not need respect from the outside. You have your own horseshit to cling to.

Weeellll, not really: or else there wouldn't be so much oppression against minority religions by Islam in Islamic countries. I don't think one should generalize in that manner; it's a little disingenuous. But I do agree the issue in the OP is very offensive and should probably be banned.

It will be extremely interesting to compare responses on this thread vs the one regarding "building a mosque on ground zero".

Personally, I think any sort of book-burning festival should be considered "incitement to riot" or at least "disturbing the peace" (my peace anyway)

I forget, is this covered by freedom of speech (ironic if so) or right to peaceful protest? Either way, a bit of reclassification is in order.

And, yes, I realize this could portray me as "intolerant", but I abhor the potential permanent loss of any data / knowledge - while not likely in this case, it certainly has occurred in the past.

(*apologies aforehand String - I realize the analogy is not perfect, but it illustrates my point.)

Quite possible. Perhaps a retaliatory "bible-burning" is in the offing? That should incite serious retaliation for said retaliation - ad nauseam.

In the current situation, I couldn't agree more.

    Stand by please...

Taking that just a bit hard, eh?

Florida has a habit of embarrassing itself. Like the judge who placed a daughter with a convicted murderer and accused child molester because he was concerned that a lesbian mother might be a bad influence on the girl. Or a jury that acquitted a rapist because they thought a woman dressed like that was asking for it.

Sure, we can pick on other states. Wisconsin, for instance, where a judge once acquitted a child molester because his three year old victim asked for it ¡t by behaving in a promiscuous manner. And then there's the whole cheesehead phenomenon. But Wisconsin just isn't as thick with embarrassing stories like that. Comparatively, the 2000 election and this book burning are extrordinary, kind of like the custody decision. So, yes, people make jokes about Florida more than they do Wisconsin. But that's also less than California, and whose hearts bleed for them?

Beyond that, you have two American classics; take it up with The Simpsons (America's Wang) and The Capitol Steps comedy troupe ("There's A Hole In the Center of the Ballot") if you want. How dare they ridicule Florida!

As to ignoring these particular morons, there's an upside and a downside to it. Upside: disempowerment. Downside: appearance of endorsement or condoning such blatant hatred. Flip a coin, I guess.

But as Pat Buchanan once explained, "I'm pretty sure those Jews in Florida weren't really voting for me."

    Quite right.

A little late for that, I'm afraid.

Indeed. Did you know that the Quran actually teaches that islam is supposed to be made victorious over all other religions, even when others are adverse to changing?

There is that implication, yes. The Muslim Brotherhood has this as one of its goals; "destroying Western civilization from within", and so forth.
