Well what the fuck is Test Drive Unlimited then? It doesn't fit into any of the above. Basically what I want is to drive 911s, aston martins etc. around a track, with some nice eye candy. I don't want The Fast and the Stupid or flinging some dingy ford escort around a forest.

Check this GF haven't tried it myself http://www.racer.nl/

Racer is a free cross-platform car simulation project (for non-commercial use), using professional car physics to achieve a realistic feeling and an excellent render engine for graphical realism. Cars, tracks and such can be created relatively easy (compared to other, more closed, driving simulations). The 3D, physics and other file formats are documented. Editors and support programs are also available to get a very customizable and expandable simulator. OpenGL is used for rendering
.

on racer.nl below download you also have "extra tools/exporters"
there is a "content- cars and tracks" link they have lots on racerXtreme

Go to the RacerXtreme site they will unzip automatically into the right folder under data/cars (place the download in that folder and right click> extract here) plus they have more.

You want Test Drive Unlimited. Real cars. All of Oahu. Great physics (if you turn all driving aids off). Lots of various races and challenges, or you can just drive around.

I'm currently playing it and loving it.

There is none of the drifting nonsense, no jazzing your car up with decals and hot-rod accessories, and lots of manufacturers. And they all drive differently.

Oh, and classic cars as well.

Well racer was a bit of a disappointment for me so far, having texture issues many skys aren't rendering right etc working on it. Maybe my graphics card is not good enough *shrug*
Did you have more luck G.F.?

Well, it doesn't play too well with a joypad, I am currently using a two analogue stick type joypad with one stick for the wheel and the other for the accelerator/brake which is kind of more realistic....the only good view is the "hood" view, but apart from that, well, I suck at it, lol. I have to put ABS etc. on otherwise every time I hit the brakes I can't compensate enough for the skid....but I mean what car these days doesn't have ABS? I can beat the AI drivers no problem though even driving like a maniac, but right now it's kind of in "pussy mode" what with the ABS etc.

As for graphics problems, works fine for me. What card do you have? Do you have the latest drivers etc?

Updated the drivers today, it's a Geforce 6200 with 256 mg of ram (not the best card but I thought it would suffice).
I get the feeling that it could be a great simulator but it requires quite abit of tweaking ...who can argue with the price ;P

Rome Total War is like a rock and roll concert by your favorite band....

well worth the price, fun as hell, and filled with giant sweaty guys in stupid clothing!
