I am trying to free up as much hard disk space as possible. I know some people think that various windows tweaks and what not are a waste of time, but I have an old computer and want as much of my disk space and ram available as possible. After a clean install, This is what is listed in my add\remove programs box. Can I get rid of a lot of that "microsoft .net" shit, and the "MSXML" stuff? What are these anyway?

If you don't use Google Chrome (a browser), you can safely uninstall it.

No, that is the bare minimum you need. Unfortunately you need a new pc and windows 7 if you are to except better performance.

I mean if you have 50 gb free, 1 gb of removed programs doesnt help. They dont take up ram unless they are running.

If you were to try to get as barebones as possible, you could probably strip Windows down further. Here's a site that can explain more. As I recall you said you were using XP:

    http://www.xxcopy.com/xxcopy80.htm

Also, if you want to explore your system performance, have you tried the Performance Monitor (perfmon.exe) that comes with Windows?

You asked what all the programs are that you have installed. Some of them are drivers. It looks like your audio driver package plus Microsoft Works and Google Chrome are biggies. You can uninstall if you don't use them. If you really need additional audio driver support, you can go to the web later and install the latest (and maybe smaller) version. You can also get rid of Java runtime and your .NET stuff. All of these can be downloaded later if you end up needing them. You'll get a message that tells you if you need Java (a coffee cup placeholder on the page). I think any app that needs .NET will crash with an exception code, so that would give you a clue you want to reinstall .NET. It just depends on what kind of functionality you want.

What is all this .net stuff anyway?

Leave the microsoft .net stuff alone, but do you use microsoft works?
Click on "sort by" to find out how much you use Works. You may be able to axe that. I agree with the rest. As good as you could expect.

Honestly, I'd just throw an additional drive in the thing. Disk space is pretty cheap these daze.

i do not have .net or java installed on my machine, i assume you wouldn't need them.
be advised that some websites require java.

you can probably get rid of DVD solution too, but that depends on what power2go offers.
the bundle i have has the player and CD burner.
you'll have to decide on power DVD, the retail version will probably offer some advantage over the bundled version.

    what is DVD solution?

you can most likely get rid of msworks too, it came bundled with my OS but i don't install it.
