Nobody can have a favorite application.

My favorite Word Processor (WordPerfect) cannot create software and my favorite applicaiton development application (Visual Basic) cannot do word processing.

For general-purpose file management, my favorite is Ztree, a Windows version of a DOS program. It cannot replace Windows Explorer, but is far superior for various file management.

And so it goes. A modern PC can do so much that many of us have at least half a dozen favorite applications.

    My favorite application?

I'll just assume that's synonomous with "program".

    Maybe Wordpad...

... or my Borland C++ Compiler.

3DSMAX5.0 I like it so much I even put up with the half a dozen crashes or corrupted files a day.
Painter7, Not quite as flexible as PhotoShop yet is more flexible when it comes to image creation. All those great brushes.
VisualStudio7 (DOTNET) Borland is falling behind.
IE6. There is always an open IE window on my desktop.

Zone alarm gave me many problems so I got rid of it. It has spyware imbeded in it. When uninstalling it , it leaves behind things and you have a time getting rid of them. It also takes things away with it when it is uninstalled so be careful.

I really like the office suite, as I've done a lot of VBA programming with it and have had a lot of fun making it go. You can really get a lot of interconnected goodness if you have the time to program it up. I do most of my development at work in Access.

However, the most utilitarian, most used application for is MSIE. The browser is the bomb.

    *blows the whistle*

Poster Xaque has misrespresented an operating system as an application.

    Illegal use of nerd terminology:

5 yard penalty, still first down.

As a text editor, it's an application.
