So there was this girl back in first year who used to really put me down, because she was high in the social hierarchy, while I was just little miss freak with the long words and weird obsessions.

She's now a single mother at 19...while I'm studying natural sciences...

    This makes me so happy.

You sound like me with the long words and obsessions

And which science are you studying? Good luck.

Well, she did just ruin her life, looks like she got what she needs for acting so high in school

It is a poly-disciplined degree, integrated sciences would have been a better name.

You can do various modules in the later levels, I'll be doing ecosystems and molecular and cell biology.

Yup. I'm glad she ruined her life. There is a certain justice in the fact that she went from being all powerful alpha girl to a piece of trash who gave her baby low weight and nicotine withdrawal due to smoking while pregnant.

She is actually planning to smoke during her next pregnancy, as she feels it is only fair if her next kid also gets a heavy dose of nicotine..

Haha, people these days fail to prioritize their life and keep making fun of ones which have goals.

I just can't stand those people in my class which have nothing on their minds but girls, socializing, sex, etc. And these types of people seem to be getting into the majority these days

This is depressing. I don't know why it cheers you up. She is going to have at least two children!
At least two people who she will raise and will carry on her genes and some of her behaviors.
Sure she may have "ruined" her life but people like her seem to raise an army of children.

    Several reasons:
it makes people think you're smart when you use long foreign words

the Germans particularly, in my experience, excel at putting an entire concept into a word or short phrase:
schadenfreude is more : self-satisfied happiness at someone else's misfortune.

Don't be happy, that's one more idiot in the world (assuming she only has one kid).

I said Schadenfreude because I don't actually know a single word in English that means the same thing.
    I didn't mean to be a snob.

    There isn't one, AFAIK.
That's why we use so many loan words.
It lends English a certain, um, je ne sais quoi.

As the root of this word in German is Schade = shame/pity and Freude = joy, perhaps we can as well say it as pity joy

Except that's not French for "I don't know".
That would be "Je ne sais pas".

Damagehappiness or as a short one: lossjoy

    Harmhappy is also good....

Examples: I am so harmhappy because that asshole broke his leg. I feel lossjoy, because my neighbour's cows died too, not just mine.

P.S.: Neither shame nor pity are good, IMHO.

It's called 'leedvermaak' in Dutch ('leed' means grief or misery, and 'vermaak' means amusement or entertainment).

I think 'gloating' is pretty close to 'Schadenfreude'.
