Well the whole idea of getting a girlfriend and potentially marry her is to find someone with similar, but not identical beliefs.

You have to be so compatible that you know your meant for each other. The fact that you ask this question means that you aren't sure. And for a long term relationship you need to be 100% sure.

They aren't issues one agrees on. I know how he feels and he I knows how I feel. We both know why the other feels that way, neither of us are going to change our minds so why fight about them? It would only make us angry over stuff that doesn't directly effect our lives anyway.

I guess it depends on what you expect out of your relationship. But if it's a serious relationship I agree with Clueless. If you have children suddenly many issues you've avoided are unavoidable.

It depends on your other values. I know couples with mixed beliefs (atheist-Christian, Hindu-Muslim, Hindu-Christian) and it's my opinion that mutual respect and the ability to discuss and accomodate differences is more relevant thanthe actual beliefs

Depends on the extremity of those beliefs.

My sister's ex-husband was a staunch creationist, believed women were inferior and should only do 'feminine' things, etc. Needless to say his beliefs caused problems.

Doesn't sound like mutual respect or willingness to accomodate differences

Some differences are too great to overcome. I don't think we're talking about trivial differences.

No they were not trivial differences.

I once almost physically attacked him...sis had to shove me back in my seat...he was spewing hate about gay people saying they were horrible immoral creatures and should kill themselves.

Well I think it's great advice. Why sit and argue about what color paint the wall is, is it green is it blue? Who cares, it doesn't matter. If you think the wall is green then it's green if they think the wall is blue then it's blue to them. It's a waste of time and energy to argue and then end up resenting each other over something so stupid. Agree to disagree and move on.
