    RE: the "does this alter the length of the day" question : I've been hearing that the earth day is now a micro-second shorter, but I have no knowledge of how this was measured/calculated.

    A theoretical calculation has been made of the change. The magnitude of the change is smaller than the error in our ability to measure any change. So, for practical purposes there has not been a change.
