Why would the universe create critters capable of understanding how it works?

Descartes famed words were "Cogito, ergo sum" which translated is something like: "I think, therefore I am". I only mention him for the reason of answering "Why would the universe create critters capable of understanding how it works?".

After all:

If there was nothing capable of understanding the universes functions (or investigate them and generate their own tangents that they define as reality),
then there is no purpose for the universe to exist.
