Ok, I am on irc.freenode.net #sciforums now, so if anyone wants to join...
So many excited people! And? How many of you are actually there? NONE. 2 am eastern (US); silence.
CAn anyone explain this IRC thing to me?
I am of the last generation to not use computers regularly/ the first generation to have computers from primary school, have been using PC's for 10 years and first went online in 1995. But I have no time and not the right kind of brain to keep up with all this stuff. So please just explain what to do to get into it. (and out again.)
Ok, I have taken this from a PM I sent to Whitewolf, I hope it helps you:
First, you have to get the programm itself, download it here: http://www.mirc.com/get.html
Just install it, you could use IRC then. But the programm is a bit complicated, so I also advise installing the programm you find here: http://www.xchat.org/windows/
Download the free older version and install it. Open it after installing, the application should start and you should get an empty window.
Chose "X-chat" from the menu bar and click on "serverlist". That should bring up a list of IRC servers and places to enter your Nicknames, fill them out and choose the "Freenode" server from the list. You will be connected to it, after that, just type "/join #sciforums" into the bottom bar and you should get onto the same channel I and WCF are on right now.
I use Trillian its easy.
I agree, that is also a good way.
If we had an OFFICAL IRC sciforums channel, I would join it....
You can't expect a IRC channel to take off quickly. But I would love to pop in when I can.
Aside from a IRC channel, it would be very user friendly if there was a JAVA CHAT link to it as well...
This tends to work well for most websites, and the user number will grow with time.
But having just a JAVA chat will not work... when I use the IRC network, I like using mIRC... but dislike using the JAVA chat. But poeple without or unaware of mIRC (or pIRCh, if anyone uses it anymore) can use the JAVA chatroom.
But for the time being, I will check out Communist Hamster's IRC channel for now. I would love the chance to be able to talk about issues like we do on sci-forums, without having to post so many threads.
Plus with a offical chatroom, a new Sub-Forum could be added inwhich we can post mIRC logs. So poeple who fail to use the chatrooms can still be involed with discussion.
Its not my channel. I think someone else on this thread started it.
Whats yo' name on trillian WCF?
look at my profile
ill be able to give some websites to get mirc, so we can go on it from the here.
Porfiry please say if you want it
Me, ghost and a friend have a website with a Java chat applet here. Y'all can chat there!
Yeah i was UmbrellaCorp thats why you see copyright
Yet vampirefreaks.com has a continuously full chatroom... what has the world come to?
i have created a sci chatroom you must have java
That chatroom cannot be found...
try this one
Ok, that one works.
