Why don't we like subcultures/people who dress differently?

It could just as easily be said that people place themselves in familiar categories.

People who are *truly* unique, without associating with any recognizable clique, are usually insane...or a genius.

Except in the case of traffic cops...

Dressing 'different' doesnt necessarily prove anything.

Why would anyone want to be different for its own sake?

Subcultural dress codes are just as restrictive.

Try showing up at a death metal concert with a tie.

Agreed: at least they're exploring options in their life.

    Agreed again. And thank you.

But again, does the motorbike-riding leather-clad cop not have a certain "maverick image"?

Not? It doesn't show that you've realised "the same as everyone else" isn't de rigeur? It doesn't show that you have the self-confidence (even if in a small group) to go against the grain? Etc.

Assuming that's the sole reason then it's a pretty sad "reason". But in the vast majority of cases in my experience it's not "for its own sake".

Actually no. There are certain expectations, but variations/ deviations are far less likely to be ostracised.

Funny you should say that. It's never been a problem for me.

I've been into a heavy metal nightclub wearing a shirt and tie. Nobody gave a shit.

I once went to a mainstream nightclub in a suit, was told I looked too formal, and was asked to take my tie off, check my jacket, and untuck my shirt. I told them to fuck off.

    Exactly.
I used to go to "alternative rock" gigs in a white shirt, tie and matching jacket/ jeans (people thought it was actually a suit).
And the closest I got to a negative response was "Shit, that's really alternative, wish I'd thought of it!"

It could be quite the opposite...a lack of confidence.

In any event, I dont see how 'going against the grain' has any value in and of itself.

People who are expected to be special, different, outrageous, or exciting ALL THE TIME usually end up getting tired of it...and seek out normality as a form of therapy.

Best case in point would be Michael Jackson's lifelong wish to push a shopping cart around in a supermarket.

Its something he was never able to do without getting mobbed, but his friends managed to shut down a store for a few hours so he could at least pretend to be normal.

They even went as far as recording muzak versions of his songs!

    Really? How so?
Putting up with morons taking the piss (or worse) just because you're not dressed in the current mass fashion is a lack of confidence?

    Independence of mind?

Not quite on-topic. It's nothing to do with other peoples' expectations, or outrageousness. It's about dressing how YOU want.

Michael Jackson was a manufactured product, not someone doing what he'd decided to do.

Yeah, I have much the same problems at certain venues. But as a private individual (not a product) I can choose when I go and when I don't. I don't have anyone else's expectations to live "up" to. Simply my own.

And I've had my "tributes" done also: but they aren't me, they aren't my responsibility, they aren't my concern: if some else wants to copy me that's that person's choice...

What do you think dressing the same proves?
Why would anyone want to be the same for its own sake???

People wanted to trade places with Michael Jackson.

Its called attention seeking...or just people who are painfully self absorbed.

You see it here everyday, people who lack confidence or anything real to say will deliberately create some form of drama or outrage just to get attention.

Schizophrenics have all the independence of mind you can handle.

    No intrinsic value there...

How would anyone even know you at certain venues?

You spend all your time here!

Or conversely the ones who don't go for subcultures are simply mindless drones who haven't (and can't) think for themselves.

So you think it's done for drama/ attention seeking?
That's a sad indictment of your outlook.

    You conflate the two?

Um, let's see: his father pushed him and his brothers into the limelight, his appearances were stage-managed (as are ALL musicians to a certain extent) etc etc...
    How about this:

Being yourself instead of repressing is attention seeking/self absorbed? Um...right...whatever you say.

Why do groups of people like to be the exact same for its own sake?
