MoMA (Queens, NY) has a nice small exhibit that is related to the subject. Meaning, they took all kinds of usual things, put them on display, and put up posters that say who invented what, and what's the importance of the invention.
Invented in 1890 by an american called Whitcomb Judson. a swedish guy called Gideon Sundback did some improvements on it in 1912 and made it basically how it is today.
