They probably got our broadcast of the alien conspiracies/lab experiments and saw what we did to FAKE aliens and shot off. Alien 1: "Hey, have you seen this broadcast coming off Earth?" Even if those three provisions were met in full, how would we handle an interaction between ourselves, at our current state of psychological development (ie fairly primitive and not mostly harmless), and some people who might be a million years or so ahead of us in physical and mental development? Even if they were the most generous, kind and friendly people we'd ever met, we'd probably still have some f'd up noddy kicking them in the teeth eventually. Besides, they're likely to be extremely different from Humans physically--how would we react to someone who looks particularly strange to us?
I don't agree. Although that made for a funny joke, I think the presumption is that an intelligent species needs to be pretty much our size or bigger to have a large enough brain to achieve sentience. They also need to be tool builders if they're going to build a spaceship. Furthermore, if they're interested in our planet, they probably evolved on one that was similiar which again argues for aliens somewhat like us.
