because we need to get off this planet as fast as we can and spread across Solar System and beyond. Putting resources and money into keeping Earth intact is a waste, as it will never supply enough resources for everyone.

Because humans are the rulers of the universe and in time we will have technology to return planets and settlments into their original state and reverse the adverse effects of society, however right now we should focus and staying alive in the universe and increasing our chances for the future.
